Google today announced Project Tango, an Android-based prototype 5″ phone and developer kit with advanced 3D sensors out of its Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) hardware skunkworks group. Using its sensors, the phone doesn’t just track motion, but it can actually build a visual map of rooms using 3D scanning. The company believes the combination of these sensors with advanced computer vision techniques will open up new avenues for indoor navigation and immersive gaming, among many other things.
Source First thing I thought of was combining with VR tech, you'd be able to live in someone else's house, essentially. There are two cameras on the back. It takes two to tango. Clever name.
hey it's Johnny Lee, finally got to know what he's up to at google after he left microsoft establishing the kinect.
This seems like one of those things that's nifty but you would almost never use, like voice commands or passbook.

But, for someone like me who makes stuff I'd definitely scan constantly, however only if it's affordable. Common consumer, no idea, I think it would depend on fetching crowd sourced maps of areas and what devs make out of it.
The sensor placement I'm sure is for a good reason but it seems a bit awkward considering how you typically hold a phone. Most people would have their hands covering the bottom bits, the guy in the video even does it at around 2:43
Got to hand it to google eventually something they throw at that wall of theirs will stick with the average consumer and we will have revolutionary phones again :) what would we do without you google?
Someone could use this to easily map pretty much anything, putting your house or school into CSS has never been so easy.

This is something that would be great to have when 3D printers become cheap and everyone can own one.
Eat your heart out, Lucius Fox
Sounds like great technology, but why the hell would you want that on your phone? It turns something really cool into a pricey gimmick.
Kinda skeptic about the uses of this for the average consumer, but it might be interesting for developers to play with.
I bet it has tens of minutes of battery life!
glass would definitely benefit from this tech
Apple launches a competitor device called the iMango

On a serous note, it has one use that i can think of that would improve use for consumers besides what i just mentioned is that you can navigate through places where gps has dropped out or is non existent where getting some estimation from phone towers.

It's notorious for making messy meshes though so it's Real-time applications are questionable.
I have a feeling hexxehh will be one of the first to get a devkit.
Damn, fucking Google is getting big :D
Kinda skeptic about the uses of this for the average consumer, but it might be interesting for developers to play with.
highly improved AR
This is something that would be great to have when 3D printers become cheap and everyone can own one.
Just imagine the point when we get 3D metal printing to be more efficient and you could literally scan engine parts and have an exact replica of it, you could start seeing a lot of people essentially build their own cars in any design they want.

Metal requires certain techniques to make it stronger, how you work it will change its properties. An engine would require very strong very precise metalwork to be safe. I guess as the tech improves they will find a way though.
Holy shit, you could use that and make some amazing arcade style shooters, like Time Crisis and shit but with actual ducking and weaving instead of a foot plate that makes you duck.
You could. I thinks it's how Oculus's Crystal Cove prototype works.
Holy shit, you could use that and make some amazing arcade style shooters, like Time Crisis and shit but with actual ducking and weaving instead of a foot plate that makes you duck.
with only head tracking it only works with one eye, you'd need a fat rift if you wanted to be able to use both your eyes
Holy shit, you could use that and make some amazing arcade style shooters, like Time Crisis and shit but with actual ducking and weaving instead of a foot plate that makes you duck.
That's how do really good tracking that's also low cost, it's really far superior then QR codes. Currently right now what he's doing isn't viable to that head tacking, but it's robust in that you can map out a room and have virtual laser tag where you can do curve shots or volley grenades.
