North Korea may have detained an elderly U.S. man last month who entered the country on a tourist visa, Kyodo News Service said on Wednesday, citing an unnamed diplomatic source.
Kyodo, in a report from Beijing, said the possible detention could become another diplomatic bargaining chip for North Korea, which has held Kenneth Bae, a Korean-American Christian missionary, since November 2012. Bae has been sentenced by the Pyongyang regime to 15 years of hard labour.
The U.S. State Department echoed U.S. embassy officials in Beijing and Seoul who said they were aware of the reports but could not confirm them.
Does North Korea want to scare away tourists? Even if this was a missionary this is still bad press.
No, really: Who the hell decides to go on a tour of North Korea in the first place? What kind of thought process is required to think that is even slightly a good idea?
I mean, besides Dennis Rodman and Rayhalo.

Seriously, did Jews in the 40's plan vacations, saying "Yeah, that Hitler guy's kind of an asshole, but I hear Paris is LOVELY this time of year?"
Yeah it sucks but this guy was caught secretly carrying out Christian missionary trips under the guise of a tourist company. You're also pretty dumb if you think it's safe to have pictures of starving North Korean's on your harddrive over there.
15 years hard labour in a North Korean camp for an Eldery?
That's a death sentence

They'll happily give out death sentences.

There are some really cool monuments to see in Pyongyang.
Well its his dumbass fault for trying to spread a shitty religion in a country that wont tolerate it. Religion is not above the law.

Burgeois press sensationalism.
Well its his dumbass fault for trying to spread a shitty religion in a country that wont tolerate it. Religion is not above the law.
no at best they should have kicked him out if it bugged it them much with of course a lot of warning before hand.

You realize the missionary part is referring to a separate incident of a person who did this a year ago, one Kenneth Bae, and not the unnamed elderly person that this refers to?
No, I suppose that judging from your post, probably not.
guys... a lot of Korean war vets are going to north Korea to revisit old battlefields or find remains, this guy sounds like he was doing so
Whenever I hear of north korea, I'm always reminded of this one poem:
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
North Korea is no exception to the meaning behind this.

It would be fascinating to see their culture and how they survive without modern technology, see how they live etc.. I would really like to travel there to see all that before they crumble and modern technology takes over.
I'm sure as long as you do everything legally, and do what they tell you you have no reason to worry. According to this thread that person did not and so he got imprisoned.

Due to my paranoid nature, I have a feeling I'd feel two steps from a death sentence the entire time I'd be over there.

I don't know if "Empire" is traditionally a word I'd associate with North Korea
I don't know if "Empire" is traditionally a word I'd associate with North Korea
but north korea has a vast empire, stretching from the top of the korean peninsula all the way down to the middle of the korean peninsula

I think it's more North Korea's fault for being a brutal, tyrannical regime that seems to hate everything.

Thousands of possibilities for things to say about this article, and you pick that one.
I hope nobody you love sees this, because this is outright shameful.
I love how everyone here tries to be so morally correct, that shit just doesn't work in the real world. I expected this kind of reaction and its actually quite funny, gave me a good giggle. Said my bit now anyway, so hate away, I'm out!

I don't even know why you would want to tour that place, name the good exception of a documentary, in the first place.

The missionary you said was spreading religion was from a separate incident you dolt. It like even says they have held the missionary from 2012, and that the old man is separate.

"I pretended to be stupid all along!" makes you look even worse you know. And your sense of humor is comparable to a rock if you found that funny.
