Mozilla is launching its most important release of Firefox in a very long time today. After almost two years of working on its Australis redesign, the company is now finally ready to bring it to its stable release channel.
“The point of the redesign is to adapt the design to how modern users engage with the web,” Mozilla VP for Firefox Johnathan Nightingale told me earlier this month. In total, the team made 1,300 user interface and bug fixes since it first publicly introduced the Australis redesign about a year ago.
One of the main aspects of this release was to make the browser more customizable. Firefox always features extensive customization options, but those were always somewhat hidden, especially for mainstream users who may not always dig into the advanced menus of their browsers.
As part of this update, Firefox now also uses Mozilla’s Firefox Accounts for syncing settings and bookmarks between machines. Instead of its rather arcane older syncing system, which mostly avoided using any cloud services for storing your information, the new system relies on Mozilla’s online services. Previously, Nightingale told me, many users didn’t even know Firefox had a built-in syncing feature — and those who did often didn’t use it simply because it wasn’t exactly easy to use. The new Firefox Accounts uses the usual combination of email and password instead of random codes.
it looks like chrome
why
I don't use Firefox much but that's a lot better IMO.
If you can't beat them, join 'em
Wow, the resemblance to Chrome is uncanny.
And to think my Firefox-using friends always got mad at me when I said it's been getting more and more like Chrome.
dont know what chrome you guys are using but it looks more like old firefox than this chromey womey
My friend told me about this beforehand and I immediately disabled auto-update. Close call.
I'm perfectly fine with outdated software security as long as the features I rely on remain intact.
Edit: Alright I updated.
I just updated, and honestly, I like it.
Everything feels less cluttered and the webpages feel bigger, if that makes sense.
Like, you can see more of the web page.
It literally looks like they just moved the button, not sure why everyone calls it out on being like chrome.
Im downloading it right now
I've wanted to switch to Firefox a few times but it's always so slow compared to Chrome.
What's the problem with the design? Is it the fact that it looks/functions more like Chrome? Because that honestly doesn't seem like a bad thing to me, having to use FireFox's old layout when having been stuck with chrome with so long is pretty tedious (I'm sure it's the same the other way around though) But personally, it's a better layout it hasn't sacrificed any functionality for the sake of simplicity.
Just updated too, and I like it as well.
Pretty snazzy.

I use both firefox (at work) and chrome (at home) and honestly the speed difference is negligible.

"Oh no! the product I am a rabid fanboy of is starting to look like that other product I really despise for no good reason!!"
"Better not receive more updates, even if they include security fixes, lest people think I'm using Chrome!!!"
Was using this before in beta, pretty good. A few things do take getting used to but its no issue.

Or I could just not like the design and prefer the old toolset layout. :rolleye:
That's nice, I always hated the larger overhead menu of firefox.
Been using Firefox for god knows how long now. Always preferred it over chrome
I'm going to miss the current interface, to be truthfully honest

is this going to be windows 8 all over again, where all the changes (that aren't actually that bad) can easily be reversed with one download?
I've been using this since it came into the Aurora build, I really like it personally.
Will it be fully customizable like it is now?
Their versioning system needs to be re-thought. Seeing Firefox 20,21,22,23,24...29 pop-up everywhere is kind of disconcerting... I know they are just version numbers, but it makes it seem like it has had to be largely updated "too many" times.

Yeah it is.
Will it still have memory leaks?
Serious question

Not updating such a vital program like a web browser (a program that handles your personal info and your browsing history) for not liking the UI is kind of dumb considering all the security exploits that appear constantly.
It's like saying you'd rather stay with old and unsupported Windows XP because you prefer the Luna UI language..

It's better than Firefox 2.0.1.35b.

functions the same and better though
as long as i can still have the menu bar at the top i don't care

I use Windows 7 over Windows 8. There's your argument.
Yeah it is.
To add to this, I've been able to totally get rid of my Bookmarks bar now. Everything is in one now
