What's with Western TV and having a laugh track.

I thought it was weird until I realised that it's pretty much the same as adding a laugh track or filming in front of a live audience, except they show pictures of the audience instead of just audio.

If I recall correctly, the actual people you see in the corner participated, and are just re-watching their performance in the event, so it's not like it's random people. Perhaps so they can laugh a second time, but without the risk of getting punished for it this time around.
