I just saw this movie on TNT and I fucking cried. I've never cried because of a movie before, this is the first. It's kinda old (1999) but holy fucking shit, it's good. I suggest everyone just go out and grab a copy right now. Wikipasta:
In a Louisiana nursing home in 1999, Paul Edgecomb (Dabbs Greer) begins to cry while watching the movie Top Hat. His elderly friend, Elaine, shows concern for him and Paul tells her that the film reminded him of when he was a corrections officer in charge of Death Row inmates at E Block of Cold Mountain Penitentiary during the summer of 1935. The cell block Paul (Tom Hanks) works in is called the "Green Mile" by the guards because the condemned prisoners walking to their execution are said to be walking "the last mile"; here, it is a stretch of faded lime green linoleum to the electric chair. Paul recalls that particular summer because he was suffering from the "worst urinary infection" of his life. One day, John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a 7 foot 7 inch, 515 pound African-American man convicted of raping and killing two young white girls arrives on death row. Paul learns that the girls went missing and John Coffey was found crying with both girls dead in his lap. Coffey demonstrates all the characteristics of being 'developmentally challenged': keeping to himself, fearing darkness, and being moved to tears on occasion. At the same time, Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison), a sadistic and unpopular guard, starts work. He "knows people, big people" (he is the nephew of the governor's wife), in effect preventing Paul or anybody else from doing anything significant to curb his behavior. Paul discusses Percy with Warden Hal Moores (James Cromwell) who reveals that Percy has applied to be transferred to an administrative post at Briar Ridge Mental Hospital. Paul realizes that he will only leave E Block after he has seen an execution up close. Hal and Paul also discuss Hal's terminally-ill wife, Melinda (Patricia Clarkson), who suffers from a large brain tumor. Percy recognizes that the other officers greatly dislike him and uses that to demand managing the next execution. After that, he promises, he will have himself transferred to Briar Ridge and Paul will never hear from him again if Paul puts Percy up front for the next execution. Well I cried. :v: [editline]11:50PM[/editline] The part where he fries with no water freaks me the fuck out.
I cried when I first saw it and felt like punching Percy in the fucking face
I love this movie. I tried showing it to my brother last year-2 years ago and he said it looked like a piece of shit. He claims to this day that it is his favorite movie of all time and that Eduard Delecroix is one of his favorite movie characters.
I saw it on TNT, too, but it was already maybe half-way into the movie. It was the part where [sp] they get one prisoner to drink some powder and bust the giant black guy out of jail who sucked shit out of some bat shit lady's mouth.[/sp]
It's 3 hours long, but well worth your time.
I always cry, especially in the end. I never see many people recognise this movie though.
I cried when I first saw it and felt like punching Percy in the fucking face
I felt so bad for Del when he said "That place your mouse is going to, doesn't exist." I wanted to slit his throat through the damn TV.
I felt so bad for Del when he said "That place your mouse is going to, doesn't exist." I wanted to slit his throat through the damn TV.
Same here. My brother never gets mad at movies (rarely, anyway. He's only 13 going on 14 and Reservoir Dogs and this are some of his favorite movies), but when he said "Hey! ...There's no such place. It's just another fairy tale these boys made up to keep you quiet. Just thought you should know...faggot.", he literally said out loud "You mother fucker, I hope you get killed by the end of this movie"
I felt so bad for Del when he said "That place your mouse is going to, doesn't exist." I wanted to slit his throat through the damn TV.
I don't think I've ever felt so much hate for a fictional character
I cried like a baby over this film when you know what happend. Also at the start [sp]notice how the channels change on the tv at the old folks home change towards the start of the film major foreshadowing there, never realised it till I saw it the second time[/sp]

Worded badly :v:
This is like the only film that I felt really emotional and cried afterward. Great fucking film.
Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. Ever. And this movie made me weep like a little child.
This is easily one of my favourites, I fucking cried. [sp]I also got really pissed at fucking percy or what ever his fuck, when he let the guy get fried without the wet sponge[/sp]
I didn't cry, but I loved the movie. It's sad how they convicted the poor black guy, even though he didn't do anything.
I also cried while watching this movie. One of my favorites, not many people i know appreciated it though.
This and Shawshank Redemption are both absolutely brilliant.
It's a great, sad story.
I've only read the book, should I still see it?
I've only read the book, should I still see it?
I would say yes, it's amazing.
Agreed, an excellent film, one of my favorites along with Shawshank Redemption.
I think Percy Whetmore is the first television character who has actually made my blood boil. The movie is excellent. Nothing else need be said.
It's 3 hours long, but well worth your time.
4 Hours.
4 Hours.
Oh really? I never noticed! You see? That's a good sign.
I've only read the book, but... Mouseville :smith:
Man this movie is just too damn sad, I saw it on AMC a couple times.
Overrated.
Overrated.
Uh no, I don't think so.
