On its own, Apple's iPhone business would be a Fortune 50 company. It's also bigger than all of Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500). Not just Windows or Office -- the iPhone generated more sales than the entirety of Microsoft's product lineup over the past four quarters. Microsoft famously got kicked to the curb in the smartphone race by Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) and subsequently Google (GOOG, Fortune 500). It's been forced to play catchup ever since ... so far unsuccessfully. Had Microsoft played its cards better five years ago, would it have been twice the size it is today? And would Apple be half as big? That seems unlikely, but what's clear is that the iPhone is the most business-crucial product Apple has ever released.
http://money.cnn.com/gallery/technology/2012/09/07/apple-iphone/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
Since Apple isn't actually changing the iPhone... I am sure the mass of people that buy them will realize they are getting shafted and quit buying it until they release something worthwhile...

That's incredibly sad.

Wet towel.
I predict that Apple will announce the iPhone 5 and shares will go down, experts and facepunchers will complain, and people will say its the end of the iPhone. And then it will sell record numbers and there will be record profits and Apple's shares will go back up again. It is like a yearly ritual.

well 300-500$ per iphone, compared to actual windows sales, office, and etc it makes sense its a popular phone
For extra comedy, compare the iPhone's revenue and that of Windows Phone
For extra comedy, compare the iPhone's revenue and that of Windows Phone
for even more extra comedy, Microsoft makes more money from patent licenses of android OEMs than of selling Windows Phones and the marketplace revenue
Honestly never expected Apple to rise higher than Microsoft. They've always seemed the underdog for such a long time until itunes bumped them back into the game.
I imagine if they priced the iphone relative to what other phones of the same spec are worth this figure would be MUCH lower.
Honestly never expected Apple to rise higher than Microsoft. Right now, almost all computer software is written for Windows, and that makes it hard for computer makers to use a different OS. The iPhone on the other hand, is in a growing market where people can really choose whatever they want, evidenced by the SGSIII dominance in the US market - even taking in the equation that the iPhone 5 is just around the corner. The iPhone is also an entirely different product than the SGSIII, HTC One X qand so forth. Apple control both hardware and software, while HTC and Samsung rely on Google for that - that means that manufaturers have to compete with people on the same platform, while the iPhone really is a stand-alone device.
I imagine if they priced the iphone relative to what other phones of the same spec are worth this figure would be MUCH lower.
The thing is, their product is so demanded people are ready to pay a lot for it. There's no reason to sell it cheap if there's a huge ass demand for the expensive device. It's probably every company's dream to have a product people are ready to overpay for so much.
Revenue isn't everything they should compare how much capital Apple & Microsoft have invested (although I would imagine the Iphone would win here anyway) and the revenue that companies in similar fields make this is just some silly article that a new reporter who doesn't understand business has written. It's like saying that IBM is being beaten by Dell for selling computer hardware when IBM have shifted to a software & service business model.
I'm slightly annoyed. Mostly by the fact that Microsoft runs a good chunk of the world (be it server/PC operating systems and other software), while iPhone is making Apple that much cash just because they overprice it so much (in relation to manufacturing price) compared to the other phone manufacturers.
for even more extra comedy, Microsoft makes more money from patent licenses of android OEMs than of selling Windows Phones and the marketplace revenue
Shit, Microsoft could make EVEN MORE money by just letting Android grow, instead of introducing their own competitor. What were they thinking? they should've waited until one of them were weakened in one way or another.
Since Apple isn't actually changing the iPhone... What were they thinking? they should've waited until one of them were weakened in one way or another.
I don't see how people would benefit from Android growing larger. While you may say "WP is totally irrelevant", I'd argue that especially WP's design was a kick in the butt to Google and Apple - even Apple guy Steve Wozniak (and I'd argue that this guy knows at least a thing or two) aknowledged this to be a great UI, and in some ways better than both iOS and Android. More competetition is better, and it doesn't really benefit the consumers that the companies make big profits, it's only shareholders and dilusional fanboys that benefit from that.
