As a Sophomore in High School this year, I'm taking the Driver's Ed 1 Class. My school has relatively good teachers so I know the stereotypical old-hag of a woman teaching the class won't be a problem.
My main concern is the logistics of the class- Is there a lot of 'hands-on' experience? And when exactly do you get your driving permit? I'm not really nervous as much as I am curious as to what will go on in this class.
Thank you in advance.
Expect a lot of boring law instruction and no hands on experience. You're probably going to sit there taking notes and watching corny films from the 80s.

When and how you get your permit is based on the state you live in.
They talk about trains a lot
Thanks, I was expecting as much. I have already seen a few of those terrible videos on the internet.
Of the trains? Yeah those are bad
When I was in Drivers Ed I was in an accident while out with an instructor, it wasn't my fault though, some old half blind lady pulled out in front of me :v:

also watch out for trains, those things are just out to murder you.
Those damn trains!
i slept through drivers ed and passed all the tests lmao
remember: you're not good at driving unless everyone else around you is shit at driving

A goddamn monkey can pass one of those classes, don't worry about it. Its not like you're going to get in a car and the instructor is going to tell you to perform a J-turn out of the parking spot.
The classroom portion is pretty easy, especially if you've ever looked out the window and paid any attention while riding in a car. The only things that might be difficult are obscure details, but a few points off on a written test is no big deal.
Here in Maine your hands-on experience can start before you've finished the class, but is scheduled separately. Once you've finished the class and gotten in all your supervised driving hours with an instructor, you get your permit if you pass a written test.
And yeah, they'll probably show you terrible videos about car crashes and shit as if you need to be convinced not to crash and everyone wrecks because they felt like it. Or if you live up here, you'll see a video on why you shouldn't slam your car into moose.
my drivers ed class was spent watching a lot of sports. During that whole Tiger Woods scandal my teacher put on the news and said "Y'see kids, this relates to drivers education because if Tiger Woods wasn't driving like a fuckup he wouldn't have gotten caught and none of this would have happened."
Class is easy as shit, don't worry about it. Driving isn't that big of a deal, everything's pretty much common sense as far as safety is concerned.
By law we had to have 3 hour classes on material that took 1 hour to teach.
So we played lots of games like monopoly.
My instructor mainly talked about trains
Please elaborate on the trains.
I took driver's ed summer last year
we had this driving range where we did car exercises for hours (parallel parking, side parking, backing up, etc) it was really boring and some kid got heat stroke because they wouldn't let us turn on the AC because it would 'overheat the cars'
I passed with a B, I aced the tests but did kinda bad on the road drives
We had this Indian kid in our class who always dragged cones around the driving range without knowing, he was probably the worst driver ever.

yield to train crossings or else you will die
appx. 5 billion teenagers in america die from motor vehicle collisions with trains every hour
Honestly, just expect to learn about durgs and their effects on driving, my entire experience consisted of an hour or so of reading (which I didn't do) and then a short online test. The only thing you need to make note of is the traffic regulations, like when to turn your lights on, when to start breaking for a stop sign, turn right on red, etc.
As for the driving test it's a fucking joke, just be nice to the lady, use common sense and don't pull any illegal shit and you'll be fine. Trust me.
[sp] I managed to both hit a tree and ride the curb, still passed. Florida D.M.V. sucks.[/sp]
driver's ed is a joke (as is the license test) and i honestly do not believe it actually helps people in significant ways
i'm taking it online simply because it makes my insurance cheaper; honestly it seems as if the people who took the class around my age are all fucking terrible drivers
Expect to watch old videos about drugs, trains and signals. The class is pretty easy.
I took Driver's Ed for my senior year, it was pretty damn easy.
Most of the class was just doing work from a book, and every day two people from the class are chosen to drive around town with an instructor (The class had two teachers). Plus if you were done with all your work you could volunteer to "observe" the other two drivers and just sit around for the whole period.
The driving part isn't that bad. My first time ever driving was in Driver's Ed, and it just consisted of coasting around the school's parking lot. Later on you might even go on a highway. Or if your instructor is cool, drive through Taco Bell or something.
Then you can silently judge the other person who drives, like the girl who drove with both feet and slammed the break at every yellow light, absolutely terrified whenever she had to pull out of anything more complicated than a single parking lot while having the windshield wipers on full speed.
And then there was the girl who absolutely refused to drive in the first place.
I ended up passing, and got a certificate that gives me an insurance discount. It's also used to certify yourself for a full driver's license if you don't want to do that "50 hour driving log" bullshit.

lol I wish we had the ability to do a driving course, we had to do 120 hours of logged driving and even then we have to wait at least three years (I'm on year 2, on the second stage provisional licence) for our full licence. Well I suppose that 120 hours of experience paid off I guess, nothing beats doing the real thing for that long.
[editline]6th August 2013[/editline]
The only difference between provisional stage two and the full licence anyways is that I can't drive petrol cars with forced induction (supercharged or turbocharged), or any car with more than six cylinders. Oh yeah my maximum speed limit is 100km/h and that's about it I think. There might be towing restrictions as well, maybe.
Thanks guys. This is really giving me a better scope of the class. Please keep up the stories if you'd like I really enjoy them.
Don't be nervous about actually driving. At first, the instructor tells you exactly what to do and when, and all you have to keep your car straight in the lane.
Class is dull as shit, however. Any anxiety you might have about driving will morph into boredom, if that makes you feel any better.
i've been driving since i was 17.
it's easy.
I'm pretty good at driving.
Except for my accident. And speeding ticket.
I'm really good at driving.
Our drivers ed here costs around $350 for a six-week course. Then we have to wait 6 months to get experience before we can take the final test.
I get less money in my birthday and Christmas combined so...
:suicide:

You only had to do 3 hours of In class
Jesus, I have to do 25 hours in Class and 10 hours in car
They showed pictures of cars that had been hit by trains!
