[release]ROSWELL, Ga. — A metro Atlanta man said he is upset after he was stopped by police as he tried to rush his wife to the hospital.
Johnny White told Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri he was trying to take his wife, Roxanna, who has stage 4 breast cancer, to the hospital because she was having severe chest pains.
White said while driving on Hembree Road in Roswell, a Roswell police officer stopped him for speeding.
According to the citation, White was traveling 44 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.
White said he tried explaining his wife's condition to the officer and said he was concerned she was in medical trouble.
According to White, the officer asked for some form of written proof of breast cancer.
"Why would he ask me, I’m sorry. Why would he ask me that? Why would we have to prove that my wife had cancer?" White said.

Can't argue that the cop was a dick. He probably had many similar excuses to get out of a ticket.
The cop probably should have escorted them to a hospital anyway.
This story reminds me of the footballer pulled over right in front of the hospital where his Mother-in-law was about to pass away (and did).
I would have put on the emergency blinkers and kept going, if the cop didn't get the idea he would as soon as I pulled into the hospital parking lot
Can't really blame the cop. I've heard so many stories of people trying to get out of a speeding ticket and the cop himself heard probably a lot more.
He could have escorted them to the hospital though.

The cop would probably call for backup and soon you'd have an entire swarm of police. However that might clear the roads a bit for you to get there.
Who the hell carries around proof of their illnesses?
Who the hell carries around proof of their illnesses?
A cop requiring proof that the suspect isn't trying to get out of a ticket?
EDIT: Woops. Read it as "cares about".
That's true though. As an Asian, I never go to the doctors to get a doctor's certificate because "NOTHING IS BETTER THAN CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE". That usually fucks me up during high school.
This reminds me of the boy who cried wolf, I can imagine the cop has heard many excuses for getting out of tickets, and when the real thing happens he wouldn't know.
So this isn't really the cops fault, but still a dick move on his part.
Protocols were followed. It may not always seem nice or friendly, but it protects the greater good, namely the lives of other people on the road.
Uh... how about you escort the guy to the hospital and see if he was lying there, when the person who needs medical attention is taken care of. If he was lying he gets the ticket and another one for lying about this.

Well where I live the hospital will always be less than 5 minutes away at max speed (unless something happened outside of town) so I would get there before any roads could be blocked off or anything.

Right, except protocols aren't always for the greater good, and people need to use their common sense. In this case, the policeman asked for proof that the wife had cancer - what the fuck is that, come on.

Yeah sorry. That was way off topic. What I'm trying to say is that just because you don't have a certificate/proof of illness, doesn't mean you aren't.
That's fucking dumb. What are they going to do, hand out cancer licenses?
He could have called for an ambulance instead, could he not?
I mean, no matter what, he was still speeding. Of course he's going to get pulled over if the police spots him.

Ambulance takes longer as it first needs to get to him and then go to the hospital. Of course he's gonna get pulled over but after hearing that someone needs to go to the hospital just escort them there. And if you want to be a dick so bad then fine him once they're there and the wife's with a doctor.
Oh good idea. I'm going to use cancer as an excuse next time I get pulled over.

Yeah, but when they roll up and you say it's a medical emergency they're supposed to escort you to the nearest hospital, forcing cars to move and running you through red lights.

Really depends how far from the hospital he lives. The ambulance would be able to get back and forth much faster than he would in a normal car, plus the ambulance would be a lot safer, as they have sirens and in that way an accident can be avoided.
Of course I agree that it's a dick move by the cop to ask for so many details when it's an emergency, but in the end, that's the risk of doing something illegal, which speeding is.
I wouldn't blame the cop for pulling them over, and I wouldn't blame him for being skeptical either, but it's not like they're going to keep fucking documentation of cancer around in their car.
They could have asked the cop to touch her breasts and see for himself?
Did he want him to flash her?
Who the hell carries around proof of their illnesses?
There is no real proof. He is just being a huge dick and or trying to meet his stupid quota.
Mom got pulled over when she had brest cancer and had a full mastectomy and could not wear a seatbelt because it hurt like hell. She just flashed the cop and he was like oh ok.
Just escort the couple to the nearest hospital with blues and twos and then fine him for the original speeding and ticket him for wasting police time. Dick move, but a dick move in the right direction.

how's about you keep your policing confined to the internet, detective

Wasting police time? The police wasted their (incredibly important) time.

I don't know what the standard is in the US, but in Britain an ambulance is required to get to a patient within 8 minutes for chest pains. Once there, they can provide some care (pain or respiratory relief etc.) and then get to the best hospital for the patient (not necessarily the nearest, some have better facilities for some illnesses compared to others) and they can do so on lights and sirens and run red lights. There's virtually no chance of a crash or further complication, and they can phone ahead to control to make sure there are staff waiting for the patient.
Well what can one say, if I was the police officer I would have taken the woman in my police car to the hospital sirens blaring. That way if the guy was lying I would be able to tell when I get there and do the right thing at the same time. But considering everything I think that the police officer did the right thing.

Heavily agreed
