(CNN) – A tweet from a Democratic lawmaker likening a basketball loss to the forcible removal of Native Americans in the nineteenth century was quickly deleted Thursday and replaced with an apology.
U. S. Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa initially wrote, "It's official. Ohio State is the luckiest team in the tournament. #TrailOfTears" following the Buckeyes' narrow win Thursday night that propelled them to the Elite Eight in the NCAA college basketball tournament.
The sad part is, every time a tweet is deleted because someone complains, the person who complains wins!

This is why I don't think I will never aspire to get into politics.
I don't want to have to care whenever some tool calls me out for dumb shit.
To be fair that's a very melodramatic, idiotic thing to say. Doesn't help with Americas government's record of not giving a shit about Native Americans.
Not to defend the general sense of over-touchiness in our culture, but this is tasteless enough to be offended by.
Even more so, this guy has to be fucking retarded to make off-collar potentially racist/offensive comments on social media in this day in age, so whatever happens to him is his own damn fault.

I wouldn't call the genocide of a people a dumb thing to ignore

Read the article. He wasn't even talking about that.

I think you should be the one who reads it again, maybe brush up on history too

It's on the order of
Out of Raisin Bread
#Holodormor #GODDMIT #YOLO
Does that put it in perspective?

yeah i know right you cant even compare dumb college basketball games to horrible historical events anymore without some liberal fascist nazi jumping down your neck
Why do people care?
Why do people care?
Because it was our fault.

Ah, white guilt. My favorite kind of guilt!

white guilt IS white genocide

Whatever you're referring to I'm pretty sure I had nothing to do with it.

I wasn't around in the 1800s, why am I blamed for it?
I wasn't around in the 1800s, why am I blamed for it?
this is repeated so many times and i never figured out what it even means so ill ignore it
whether you accept "blame" or not, the trail of tears was a traumatic historical event that carries cultural significance so of course some people would find it in poor taste to make light of it
its like me and my holocaust jokes
To be fair I have no idea what the Trail of Tears was until I googled it. The guys has probably less of an excuse than I do, but based on usage of the hashtag before the "incident" it doesn't seem like it was really used to mean the genocide itself, ever.

that's not what the guy was saying, though
you're completely right, it was a terrible thing. but claiming it's "our" fault is like saying modern Germany is to blame for the holocaust

he has a right to express himself and everyone else has the right to call him out for it

that's very true
The Democratic party at it's most scandalous.
Though it is a shame this kind of connection was made I don't think this amount of backlash is really necessary. As an Iowa resident I can confirm that sports is pretty much the most interesting thing to get into (around here) and guess that this guy likes sports and wanted to make a sporty tweet; he obviously didn't mean anything by it.
This basketball game was literally the #Holocaust
don't get offended anyone, it's just a tweet :downs:

putting that history major to a whole load of use, scorpious

if he didn't mean anything by it then why did he mention a direct event of genocide in American History? Using a statement confirming you're a resident of the politician's state isn't relevant either.

"my state is so boring that it's okay to be really crass about historical events"
[editline]31st March 2013[/editline]
i am from a city which is home to pretty much the two biggest sports teams on the planet but we still don't think it's okay for our politicians to make jokes about the displacement of an entire race of people in relation to sport. my issue here is mainly that a representative of the people made this joke and there's no excusing that
aw man they got #Hiroshima'd last night
I learned about the Trail of Tears from the Walking Dead
