Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has slapped down her former colleague Wyatt Roy for travelling to Iraq, after it emerged he had been caught up in a clash between Islamic State (IS) and Kurdish Peshmerga forces. Gunfire and armed men can be seen in footage provided to SBS by the former assistant minister for innovation, who said he had not been expecting to be caught in crossfire when travelling to Kurdistan, in the north of Iraq. Speaking from Iraq, Mr Roy told the ABC he was visiting a friend who works in the area providing security. He said he had only arrived a few moments before the attack began. "Unfortunately, we were a little bit unlucky and found ourselves being attacked by Daesh for about a half an hour," he said, using another name for IS. "But the coalition airforces were able to conduct an airstrike and the Peshmerga were able to push them back. "I think that shows the value of the contribution that we're making at a security level here." In a statement, Ms Bishop said: "It was irresponsible of Wyatt Roy to travel to the front line of the conflict between [IS] and Kurdish forces in Northern Iraq, in a region regarded as very high risk. "He has placed himself at risk of physical harm and capture, and acted in defiance of Government advice. "Mr Roy did not seek nor did he receive assistance from the Australian Government for his travel to Iraq.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-09-29/wyatt-roy-middle-east-firefight/7889912 My response would be that he's an adult and can make his own decisions Mrs Bishop, even if it's not very bright.
He may be an adult who can make his own decision, but odds are pretty fucking good that if he got captured by daesh he'd expect his government to get him out. That makes it at least partially their problem.

The gov is trying to make sure no one goes there, and if a former minister of the Australian government goes there, it just causes more problems.
