The combination of a gun and a surprise gone wrong left a beloved 18-year-old track star dead, authorities in Longmont, Colorado, say. Premila Lal jumped out of a closet as a harmless joke to surprise a family friend, her father says. But the noise startled the friend, who grabbed a gun and shot her. Just before 8 p.m. Premila Lal showed up at a house her family once called home. They had since moved, and were preparing to sell the place. In the meantime, Nerrek Galley, a 21-year-old friend of the family, was staying at the house. Lal and her 12-year-old cousin apparently came to visit Galley. Lal's 15-year-old brother was also at the home, hanging out with Galley. The girl's father, Praveen Lal, said in interviews with local media that his daughter entered the home unbeknownst to Galley. Authorities say the father's description of what happened next -- involving the closet, and Galley's gun -- is consistent with their investigation. "All the witnesses had consistent statements," Commander Jeffrey Satur of the Longmont Police Department told CNN Sunday. Galley has been charged with reckless endangerment, child abuse and providing a gun to a juvenile because Lal's 15-year-old brother had access to the gun, police say. So far Galley has not been charged in Lal's killing. Police said they do not suspect the involvement of alcohol or drugs. Her family described her as an athlete, popular girl and strong student. The town was already stunned by a murder-suicide a day earlier. An 80-year-old man shot his 72-year-old wife before killing himself, police say.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/08/justice/colorado-teen-accidental-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
and anti-gun activists are going to feast all over this over a terrible mistake a kid made how did the kid shoot his sister, anyways? was his gun in a holster and he just shot her out of a reaction? I would assume that as soon as you noticed it was a family member you'd calm down
Wait, did the person have the gun on them or what?
I guess the reckless endangerment is due to the fact he shot someone without knowing who he was shooting. That's why one of the rules of handling a weapon is to identify your target before you fire. If you can't tell what you're shooting, why are you firing the gun?
How did they even draw and fire the gun quick enough to not realise it was someone they knew?
As a sidenote, these are some crazy weird names. Galley, Premilla, Praveen? Are these common names anywhere in the world, or do they just have "creative" parents?
As a sidenote, these are some crazy weird names. Galley, Premilla, Praveen? Are these common names anywhere in the world, or do they just have "creative" parents?
did you bother to even look at the article bda? they're sanskrit names.
How did they even draw and fire the gun quick enough to not realise it was someone she knew?
Maybe he just assumed it was a burglar so he went and got his gun and shot her. I dunno, I don't really understand how this could happen either.
Was she wearing a mask perhaps?
it was probably dark or she was wearing a mask scaring someone as a "prank" no matter if they're likely to shoot you or not is irresponsible and unfunny
it was probably dark or she was wearing a mask scaring someone as a "prank" no matter if they're likely to shoot you or not is irresponsible and unfunny
scaring people as pranks has always been fun as fuck in my experience
Maybe he just assumed it was a burglar so he went and got his gun and shot her. I dunno, I don't really understand how this could happen either.
Or he heard her and already had his gun drawn.
As a sidenote, these are some crazy weird names. Galley, Premilla, Praveen? Are these common names anywhere in the world, or do they just have "creative" parents?
a kid is dead but wow those sure are some wacky names!
Maybe he just assumed it was a burglar so he went and got his gun and shot her. I dunno, I don't really understand how this could happen either.
From what I can gather from the article, the gun was just laying around on a table or something. That'll be why they were charged with "providing a gun to a juvenile"
wow that is awful, the shooter must feel horrible as well.
As a sidenote, these are some crazy weird names. Galley, Premilla, Praveen? Are these common names anywhere in the world, or do they just have "creative" parents?
You're living up to your name. :downs:
What's with all these gun related accidents recently?
it was probably dark or she was wearing a mask scaring someone as a "prank" no matter if they're likely to shoot you or not is irresponsible and unfunny
sound likes you've been a victim of it and can't take a joke
What's with all these gun related accidents recently?
The media feels the need to talk about them right now because of all the control measures being thrown around right now.
a kid is dead but wow those sure are some wacky names!
Oh, sorry. Something something gun control something something self-defense something something Obama. There we go. Is the girl okay now?
And that's a problem?
No? I've just never heard names like that before, which is why I asked if they were common elsewhere.
