Jesus (Ray Allen), an extremely talented high school basketball player from Brooklyn, New York is being pursued by the top college programs in the nation. His father (Denzel Washington) is a convicted felon serving time at Attica Correctional Facility for accidentally killing his wife (Jesus's mother) by pushing her while arguing with Jesus at the age of 12. The father is temporarily released by the governor, an influential alum of one of the colleges Jesus is considering, so that he might direct his son to sign with the governor's college in return for an early release.

This a beautiful film, and one of my favorite Denzel Washington performances. I'm not usually a fan of Spike Lee because he gets really old pushing the race card all the time (someone call Lee up and tell him it's 2011 I don't think he knows), but I love the way he's put this film together. He gets terrific performances out of everyone, even Ray Allen who had never acted before.
I highly recommend it.
Um, race and racial prejudices are still highly pervasive in 2011 so I still think he has the right to make films about it. Ignoring the problems won't make it go away. With that, while still focusing mainly on blacks in America (hiring mainly black casts, focusing on problems in black neighborhoods, etc.) he's drifted away from solely focusing on racial conflicts. His most recent movies either are documentaries or branch out and talk about injustice in general (sans Inside Man and Miracle at St. Anna)
