Actor CLINT EASTWOOD came up with his much-talked about empty chair speech at America's Republican National Convention last week (ends31Aug12) on a whim. The Dirty Harry star received mixed reviews when he arrived at the political event in Tampa, Florida on 30 August (12) and began chatting to an invisible President Barack Obama about foreign policy and economics, suggesting it was time the Democratic leader was ousted in favor of his party's candidate Mitt Romney. Now Eastwood, 82, has opened up about his unconventional approach in rallying support for Romney, revealing he came up with the idea right before he took the stage and had no time to rehearse. He tells local California newspaper The Pine Cone, "There was a stool there, and some fella kept asking me if I wanted to sit down. When I saw the stool sitting there, it gave me the idea. 'I'll just put the stool out there and I'll talk to Mr. Obama and ask him why he didn't keep all of the promises he made to everybody.'" And the director admits his stunt was a surprise to everyone on the campaign trail: "They (convention organisers) vet most of the people, but I told them, 'You can't do that with me, because I don't know what I'm going to say.'" Members of the opposing Democratic Party poked fun at the movie legend's performance, which immediately prompted a new trend of talking to an empty chair, known as Eastwooding, but Obama took the star's quirky appearance in his stride, saying, "One thing about being President or running for president - if you're easily offended, you should probably choose another profession."
Source http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/entertainment/celebrity/Clint-Eastwood-breaks-silence-on-empty-chair-speech_89892968
I can't find this funny, Clint Eastwood was such a badass ;_;
but Obama is betteeeeerrr.
Wait so did he ad lib the whole thing?
I can't find this funny, Clint Eastwood was such a badass ;_;
He still is. He's just not the best public speaker ever.
I don't think a no-nonsense candidate making realistic promises would even stand a chance when people are fooled so easily by hype and big words.
I thought it was pretty funny. I liked when he'd look over at imaginary Obama and said "No I won't tell Mitt to do that to himself" implying Obama said to mitt "go fuck yourself" lol
Wait so did he ad lib the whole thing?
Wasn't that plainly, painfully obvious...? I doubt any speech written included 90% of the words as "Uh, um, uh, um, uh, um".
Poor Clint, he must be humiliated.
Poor Clint, he must be humiliated.
If anyone's tough enough to take it, it's him.
Poor Clint, he must be humiliated.
It would be more humiliating if he actually wrote and rehearsed the speech beforehand. At least he can say "Well, I did it on a whim."
Wasn't that plainly, painfully obvious...? I doubt any speech written included 90% of the words as "Uh, um, uh, um, uh, um".
I thought he at least had some sort of rough outline before he started, I didn't know he winged the whole thing
Eastwood isn't a badass, he just plays badasses. there is a difference.
Shit that's a pretty good idea to come up on the fly. Even though I don't agree with his political ideology I think he's a great person.
Eastwood isn't a badass, he just plays badasses. there is a difference.
you're a badass if you can portray a badass and direct a movie that's badass
Eastwood isn't a badass, he just plays badasses. there is a difference.
He survived a plane crash at sea during the Korean war and became one of the most known actors and directors entirely on accident. Nah, he's a badass.
Wait so did he ad lib the whole thing?
From what the article says, yeah, pretty much. :v:
Shit that's a pretty good idea to come up on the fly. Even though I don't agree with his political ideology I think he's a great person.
It's a good idea unless you're doing it for a political convention.
i watched it and i felt genuinely confused. like i suddenly started watching an SNL sketch with Eastwood as a guest actor. it didn't even really make an impact because he kind of mumbled about some random topics really weird
he just struck me as a senile old man
He still is. He's just not the best public speaker ever.
or political decision maker
he's a dumbass with ideology as bad as romney
What do republicans think of the speech?
or political decision maker
As far as I know he never was a political decision maker. Has he ever held any form of office?
Clint Eastwood is actually a very good person and was known to be a respectable mayor years ago. He doesn't play by party politics or ideology, but rather what he believes is best for the individual. Which is why he's also pro-choice and pro-gay rights. He's been a libertarian for years. It just so happens in this election that he's putting his hat in for Romney. Oh well. [editline]10th September 2012[/editline]
Has he ever held any form of office?
Yes. He was mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea during the Reagan years. He's also worked on various commissions in California over the years, including film and environmental groups.
If anyone's tough enough to take it, it's him.
Just sayin, you guys know he's nothing like his movie characters in real life right? He plays piano and he hates cigars.
As far as I know he never was a political decision maker. Has he ever held any form of office?
choosing to endorse a candidate is a decision brace yourself of the political variety
Eastwood isn't a badass, he just plays badasses. there is a difference.
He's also a fully licensed pilot and regularly flies his own helicopter to studios to avoid traffic. The man is badass, admit it.
To be frank, I thought it was pretty funny, even though I don't agree with his views. I don't see why so many people started throwing a shitfit over it
I saw a confused old man talking to a chair.
