• Activision Admits 'Call of Duty: Ghosts' Didn't Outsell 'Black Ops 2' At Launch
It seemed like Call of Duty’s day-one sales record streak would come to an end when they were forced to premiere their new game, Ghosts, across six different platforms not all available at the same time. It was all but confirmed when the numbers Activision released the next day boasted of a billion dollars worth of units shipped, not sold. But now, they’re finally saying it out loud. CFO Dennis Durkin had this to say during Activision’s earnings call: “Today, we announced that we had shipped into retail more than $1bn of Call of Duty: Ghosts globally on day one based on an average wholesale price. As expected, due to the console transition and digital distribution, this number is down versus last year.” “This year, the sell-through curve will be different than in past years due to the multiple launches of new hardware later in the month and more days between our launch and the high-volume Black Friday at the end of the month.” Previously, Call of Duty had outsold its past installment on day one by tens or hundreds million dollars more with each new annual release, ultimately culminating in $500M day one sales of Black Ops 2 last year. This year, however, their record was snapped, or rather obliterated, by Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V which had $800M in day one sales. Activision claimed that they wanted to “take their throne back” from Rockstar with Ghosts, but given the next-gen console landscape of the Xbox One and PS4, that wasn’t likely going to be possible. Many players are probably holding out another few weeks to pick up copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts for the next-gen systems they’ve preordered. It’s why sales aren’t anywhere close to GTA V, but also not at Black Ops 2′s level either. The same is true for other franchises like EA’s Battlefield 4 and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 4, where sales are down ahead of the release of the new consoles. Still, I think it was somewhat disingenuous for Activision to blast out misleading headlines touting “ $1B in sales” when the number of games shipped is not in any way a meaningful comparison to the number of games sold. Well, atleast someone from Activision is honest.
Shocking
maybe if you didn't release it a few weeks after the biggest selling game ever has been released you wouldn't have this problem
maybe if you didn't release it a few weeks after the biggest selling game ever has been released you wouldn't have this problem
And a few weeks before the hotly-awaited new generation of HD-era consoles shipped, replacing the old creaking beasts that're on the last year or so of their lifespan.
I don't think they will get nearly the sales they think they will if they are relying on next gen consoles. Both the xbox one and PS4 are reported to have stuttering issues, and they sure as hell cannot rely on PC gamers. Also, by the time the PS4 and xbox one come out, the selling factor will have dried up.
Admit makes it sound like they were keeping it a secret, maybe reported would be a better word...
As expected, due to the console transition and digital distribution, this number is down versus last year."
So, this isn't exactly indicative of the series going downhill.
So, this isn't exactly indicative of the series going downhill.
Ghosts sucks. 3arc will probably put out a better CoD.
Admit makes it sound like they were keeping it a secret, maybe reported would be a better word...
They tried to make it seem like they sold a billion copies in a day initially, but that was just copies sold and shipped to retailers. It's pretty clear they're a bit antsy about how well this game may or may not be doing considering all the harsh word of mouth going around, but it'll break a profit anyway because it's Call of Duty.
With microsoft avertising Ghosts on the xbone as the next big thing in grafix and online multi-player; I wouldn't be surprised that a whole bunch of people are holding out for the ps4/xbone release of the ghosts because grafix. Also the pc port is a piece of shit and locked out the poorer side of the COD croud.
Serves them right. Bragging about Outselling GTA 5 was probably one of the most stupid things you could say.
I dunno why they even bothered releasing it when the new generation is coming out so soon, couldn't they have just waited? Though, I guess this way they'll sell a massive amount of copies, a lot from their "pay $10 to get the next gen version if you have the current gen version!" thing, which means that many of the sales won't be indicative of money.

"Due to the console transition and digital distribution" Pathetic. Even when blatantly failing they just can't take it and grit their teeth.

Paying to get the next-gen version as well as a current-gen apparently gives you download vouchers instead of a disc at all. And the game is almost fifty gigs, meaning no disc installation. Even an average joe's internet would cry, and it'd take days for me to download that much.
So, this isn't exactly indicative of the series going downhill.
They're blatantly just trying to deflect any issue with the product and blame it on something else.
They're blatantly just trying to deflect any issue with the product and blame it on something else.
What else do you expect them to do? Make a good game?
"Due to the console transition and digital distribution" Pathetic. Even when blatantly failing they just can't take it and grit their teeth.
Are you serious? Just because you have a dissenting opinion doesn't change the facts.
"Due to the console transition and digital distribution"
To be fair the console transition is a valid point.
Are you serious? Just because you have a dissenting opinion doesn't change the facts.
I guess Rockstar had the same problem with GTAV..oh wait.
I guess Rockstar had the same problem with GTAV..oh wait.
Except GTA5 isn't releasing on the next generation console, but Ghosts is. At least, they haven't announced it in any fashion, and there is no reasonable expectation for it.
"Due to the console transition and digital distribution" Pathetic. Even when blatantly failing they just can't take it and grit their teeth.
This is the real pathetic thing. You are just making stupid and blind posts without thinking. Of course the sales are down due to the transition. Every single thing that has to do with Call of Duty isn't wrong by default.
I bought MW3 and that was it. I'll probably never buy another game that IW makes again. Black Ops II was just far superior in every way, IMO. The 10 point system and wildcards were just absolute genius for preventing retardedly OP classes.

It's clear that the real brains behind the series up until after MW2 went over to Respawn, who are working on Titanfall.
I can't wait for the new consoles to come out. Just lay back, eat some popcorn, and listen to the bitching about technical issues.
"Due to the console transition and digital distribution" Pathetic. as the ambassador of hating call of duty this pleases me they shouldn't have acted like arrogant twats to a company that makes games of actual quality and deserved the sales they got. serves em right
as the ambassador of hating call of duty
This position is already filled on FP :v:
