Wow seeing this reminded me of just how outdated HL2 is, the level design is awful (not the mechanics/design but the aesthetics) the rooms are just blocky vacous cubes and outside has flat sharp cliffs and flat unnatural environments, not to mention that train area was just a really undetailed narrow corridor with the sky pasted in, most decent mappers could outperform a lot of these levels in terms of aesthetics, just goes to show how they evolved as designers because the episode 2 maps were beautiful (not just from a shader standpoint).
HL2 was still better than everything else in its time though.

2004 is such a long time ago jesus

Near the end of the game there's a room filled with baths, it's a little ridiculous, here it is in fact:

Wait can you actually do that and just move on with the game without the gunship battle
what the fuck
but you need the car and the rpg to finish the game
ye you need the car to jump the next bridge

It's not so impressive now, but it was amazing back when it came out. It probably also has something to do with performance; home PCs back then weren't what they are now. Of course we can afford complicated and taxing map design now because everyone generally has better hardware.

Nah the source engine and everything made in it is quite blocky in general
There have been major advancements in rock and wavy ground technology though
And yet HL and HL2 still manage to be more fun than any railshooters today. SUCK IT, CoD.

But duke nukem forever was based on CoD and hl2 was based off of Duke nukem forever. Therefore cod>hl2. I bet you feel stupid now.

I dunno, they were really good back then but you can't deny there are much faster and fun to play games out there nowadays
Graphics don't make a game but Half-Life isn't something on anyone's "must play" list these days
Half Life 2 is still one of my favorite games ever.
Despite nearly knowing it by heart, playing through it is always fun.
It feels so different from anything else around.

It was average. I never really understood the hype over it. Yeah, it was really cool at the time, but it wasn't that spectacular.
Now let's wait for the opinion police.

Couple of things might make it real fun to this day for some. These things include, but are not limited to:
Hit point health system, same for suit energy instead of mutant regenererating.
Hammerspace arsenal, Gordon can stash a dozen sticks on him, anything between a pistol to a atom eradicating Gluon Gun.
This means no deciding what 2 guns I will can lug to the next mission, instead tactics can be combined with the most appropriate gun.
Narration is successful for it's kind, player will nearly NEVER be pulled away from Gordon's point of view, his and the player's experiences are practically one and the same.
The only thing that has aged in HL2 for me is its graphics, plus some limitations like only so and so many different faces.
Its gameplay is still really fun and diverse due to the weapon variety and puzzle or vehicle sections that eliminate "combat fatigue". Plus non-HP-regen makes everything more intense. Plus Gravity Gun is making it incredibly fun to interact with the world - which is what games should be all about - and can lead to some pretty creative moments. It also lets you put up barricades or defenses like turrets or mines without adding complexity.
Storytelling technique is still amazing, so much is learned just through gameplay or the world. Facial animations and animations in general still stand out today, not a lot of shooters have NPCs that actually look at you. The levels are a nice mix between linearity and distractions on the roadside, tho the "gates" during which NPCs talk can be annoying if you're just doing a run for the gameplay. The AI isn't mindblowing, but definitely not stupid, and does a good job at flushing you out. That combined with the suit's speed mode leads to very fluid and fast-paced combat without making it needlessly hectic and dull.
It also has a lot of different scenery to offer, from the city and canals to Ravenholm and its mines to abandoned facilities and Combine structures.
I bought the Orange Box for TF2 and was very skeptical about the HL2 hype, but after months I gave it a try anyway and I had a lot of fun.
In 2004 I was severely impressed by Half-Life 2. I loved the overall mood of the game and atmosphere of the city levels. But I believe my anticipation for Half-life 2 overshadowed my real opinion about the game. I think I should revisit this game soon.

Honestly I never really got the hype for HL2, just my opinion. Aside from the physics engine I didn't find anything about it incredibly unique and, for me at least, its release was overshadowed by games like San Andreas and Halo 2. I only ever bought it after finding gmod.
