I work in a Sainsburys about 30-40 minutes away from there in the coffee shop. When we were having the machine serviced, the engineer told me that if you don't clean the machine properly, it can explode like that (due to crap getting stuck deep the machine then getting burnt on), though admittedly you'd notice it acting up before hand. Still feel sorry for the poor bastards though.
