Bernie Sanders Introduces Bill to End Federal Ban on Marijuana
Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) has introduced legislation to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.
The Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act introduced Wednesday by Sanders would end the long-time federal prohibition on marijuana. This is the first Senate bill to propose legalizing recreational pot, according to marijuana advocates.
The legislation would remove the barriers for states that want to legalize recreational and medical marijuana without interference from the federal government. However, other states could still choose to prohibit pot.
The move could help Sanders further endear himself to younger voters as he seeks the Democratic presidential nomination. He became the first candidate from a major party to endorse marijuana legalization last week.
The important thing is that states can still choose to ban it. Not that its money well spent doing so.
I have a feeling the bill won't pass either way, even with the inclusion of the ability for states to still prohibit the recreational use of marijuana if they choose to do so. Definitely interested in seeing how far the bill gets, however.
its a states right!
so pass it you replebican dummies

Republicans won't let him pass it because it would make him look good and he's running for president.

And this is the doom of our country.

Exactly this. It's not a bill he hopes will pass, it's a bill he's using so he can further his campaign.
"I introduced legislation to legalize marijuana! I stand for the average American!"

What's wrong with doing that? He has always been pro-legalization.

He's still independent tho? Like yeah he caucuses with the democrats but he isnt a democrat, yet at least

The way you say that sounds like you're mocking him, but the majority of Americans do support marijuana legalization.

how it can be translated for republican libertarians "i proposed a bill that reduced the size and scope of the government while improving states rights!, and they shot it down!"

honestly the government doesn't need a law to remove it from prohibition, they need to follow their laws, which include rescheduling of drugs every 10 years based on evidence, which they have never done
The way you say that sounds like you're mocking him, but the majority of Americans do support marijuana legalization.
Doesn't really seem to be mocking him, but rather pointing out that it is a rather tactical bill.

Perhaps, but one that really should be considered given that the majority of the public is in favor. It doesn't seem to be nearly as ridiculous as some other legislation that is drafted for the sole purpose of campaigning.

It should be considered, but it won't be.
Why would any politician vote to lose control of a major political bargaining chip, after already losing the gay rights chip earlier this year?
It's just too big and too good to get rid of yet. It'll be another year or so before they vote it into legalization.
This along with Canada's new Prime Minister promising to legalize it makes things look bright for pot smokers in the early future. Hopefully someone figures out a reasonable DUI solution soon though..

I agree with your statement as well. This bill is essentially a win-win for him. It looks good on him, and its in favor with public opinion, and it looks bad when they shoot it down because they are a bunch of uncompromising fucks.

But this makes it sound like he's just being another opportunist, careerist politician.
He really isn't, he's being the left alternative he is. There's really no one more fitting, presidential candidate or not, to propose such a bill. He's doing what he does best, which is a strategy virtually no politician does since it basically means being a niche leftist without any clout.
However there is a chance that he and his ideas could actually get some, if only because the American people have become receptive to such things on their own, which is what is so amazing considering most of our political shifts don't come into play like that.
Capturing that wider left wing momentum, I can't think of a better face and champion for pot legalization and other left issues during a time of political apathy and intense dissatisfaction with congress.
You really have to almost choose to interpret Bernie as an opportunist in this situation, because what he's doing otherwise makes perfect sense for what he's always been as a politician (which is quite the opposite of an opportunist or careerist).

"States rights only matters when its our shit" -Both sides to every issue
Interesting how states are legalizing it anyway despite the bans.
I'd like for it to pass, but it won't.
I mean, fuck the potheads lock them up right?
Cause with the failure in Ohio to legalize pot I'm starting to think the country is going to lean right wing very soon, if it isn't already.

Its depressing that the left is more obsessed with identity politics than the actual issues.

The truth is from what I've seen both sides have idiots. Being an idiot isn't necessarily correlated with either party.
Honestly I'm more afraid of the the far righters because they're a comparatively larger minority and more willing to disregard all common sense.
Look at Anti-Vaccination activists and the Religious Right for starters. Oh and don't forget the KKK.
On the other hand, the left wing has idiots who want to legalize all drugs, raise taxes on everyone, believers in Marxist-economics, black-supremacists, etc.

Antivax is hardly a right wing phenomena.

The ohio legalization bill was a big piece of shit though. It basically allowed pot to only be grown by a small group of people and basically said you had to do an extraordinary amount of work to allow anyone else to grow and sell. Even legalization supporters hated it.
420 Bern it!
