Alex Salmond is to step down as first minister of Scotland after voters decisively rejected independence.
He will also resign as leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) after the "No" side won Thursday's referendum by 2,001,926 to 1,617,989 for "Yes".
Mr Salmond told a media conference: "For me as leader my time is nearly over but for Scotland the campaign continues and the dream shall never die."
Speaking from Bute House in Edinburgh, the first minister's official residence, he told journalists: "I am immensely proud of the campaign that Yes Scotland fought and particularly of the 1.6m voters who rallied to that cause."
He tried his best to fight for what he believed in.
I like this.
I didn't like the guy but I liked his cause.
Hopefully they can get someone to better rally the cause, lots of people didn't trust him or thought he was doing it for selfish reasons, maybe next referendum will go better.

Isn't that in 30 years or something?
A little cowardly in my opinion, there's still a lot of work to do. Then again maybe Nicola Sturgeon is better suited to getting the best deal for Scotland now.
Isn't that in 30 years or something?
Not sure but I think there will be one.
Nearly half of the country supporting referendum, uk gov already thinking twice about keeping its promises, chances of more conservatives or UKIP next election.
I know there was tlak of it being the last referendum on the issue but I think the people will demand another if things don't change.
The 2014 version of Braveheart was pretty tame I gotta say
[sp]was still watching the polls pretty excitedly though[/sp]

It's been suggested that in the event that the UK votes to leave the EU Scotland will hold a referendum to leave should it come to pass.
It's been suggested that in the event that the UK votes to leave the EU Scotland will hold a referendum to leave should it come to pass.
It's still extremely unlikely the UK would actually leave the EU.

So did Hitler.
It's a bit sad, I heard he was a pretty good First Minister, regardless of the whole referendum shambles.
I suppose this is what happens with these things, you either succeed beyond your wildest dreams, or the whole thing ends in tears.

Scary Salmond sharing a trait with Hitler. Definately a nazi, very scary stuff indeed.
Lucky they haven't left or there might have been concentration camps!

It's going to be us or France. At which point it will only be a matter of time before the whole thing collapses.

Mary's tits, it was a joke.
Its sort of courtesy in the UK when you lose you step down.
Mary's tits, it was a joke.
But an unneeded one.
Mary's tits, it was a joke.
Pretty shit joke m8
His own council gave a resounding no vote maybe that was a factor?
What is really surprising is that he was willing to fight for the possibility of an independent scotland, but will not finish the job by entering into the negotiation for greater devolved powers. Which he arguably is in the best position to do this on behalf of the Scottish people.
Mary's tits, it was a joke.
Must have been quit the shocker when you discovered it actually wasn't funny.
His "Yes" campaign and his party relied on just shitting on England all the time. I don't like him but I appreciate his dedication. Glad he's gone.
It's going to be us or France. At which point it will only be a matter of time before the whole thing collapses.
Not really. Spain isn't that important when it comes to the EU although France is more important.

I don't live in Spain anymore. (But for some reason it still says I do.)

Dunno what you're talking about, how was it about "Shitting on England", if anything it was about how the scotland has the potential to be a strong independent black wom... Country

Sorry but how was the Yes campaign based around shitting on England?
More like shitting on westminster.
As I said in a previous thread, it's all about london fuck the rest of the english counties.
birmingham will never get the powers to do our own shit.

I don't like Salmond, or his cause for that matter (sorry!) but I have to admire his determination to get it done. I wish more politicians were like him in that regard.
