• DVD Collection Vs. Netflix

I have a thing for collecting DVDs after noticing my friend's DVD collection. Something about having a physical library of DVDs is awesome to me. It gets expensive, though. After using the Netflix trial, I'm not sure if I should still collect DVDs. Streaming Vs. Physical. What to choose? What are your opinions on this? Are there any major downsides to exclusively streaming movies? Is there a third idea that is even better for the movie enthusiast? What do you guys do?
netflix isn't in the UK so dvds I suppose
Netflix. Seriously, the sooner we drop physical media, the better.
I think the best option is watching first via streaming and then buying blu-rays of your favorites
Netflix. Seriously, the sooner we drop physical media, the better.
i like knowing I have something forever that said I abhor dvd's, I think media sold in stores belongs on SD-Cards. think of how much smaller dvd players could be if they were sd-players too
Netflix is awesome but i prefer owning a movie i love alot
I watch movies on netflix, and if I like it I buy the Bluray disk.
It sucks how were losing the experience of stuff just because of technology. Drive thrus take out the fun of ordering and possibly chatting with a cashier. Drive-ins were somewhat inconvenient for watching movies, but you got to watch a movie in the comfort of your own car and it was like a private make-out booth. I miss Blockbuster because I would have a fun time browsing through the movies and watching the in-store movie trailers. Another non-movie would be cell phones. Everybody texts and it takes away the feeling you get when you hear another human voice. Its a shame that the experience isn't even becoming optional anymore.

Anyways I can't wait for Netflix on the 3ds. 3d streaming sounds so cool if they get it right.
So should I sell my DVD collection?
So should I sell my DVD collection?
Copy the video over to a hard drive and then sell them on craigslist
I'd advise against copying it over as a regular video. Back it up correctly so you can actually run it like a dvd.
i prefer dvds because you can show off your collection. but i do love netflix i watch it all the time
I'd advise against copying it over as a regular video. Just a tip, VLC and iirc most other video players can read an iso as a dvd without mounting it.
Isn't that illegal?
Isn't that illegal?
I think its only illegal if you don't own them, kind of like downloading ROMs
Isn't that illegal?
No clue, I'll plead ignorance. I started doing it when I realized it's easier to do that than wait until the dvd is scratched up. Just became common practice when I get a movie.
don't even have netflix here, so physical media i prefer physical media in every form, its a lot less impressive to have a large library of digital media "hey bro check out my sweet movie and video game collection, takes up a whole bookcase!" as oppose to "check out my sick collection *takes out ipod full of movies*"
Doesn't streaming a movie online chew up a lot of your bandwidth?
You can burn a media collection to dvds and get the same type of case you'd get a normal dvd in for considerably less using netflix to get the dvds
bootleg looking dvd cases aren't very impressive to look at
bootleg looking dvd cases aren't very impressive to look at
Who cares about what it looks like? It's the content that matters. I don't care if it's bootleg or all legit, if all you have is obscure anime I don't want anything to do with it. My friend actually DOES have a huge collection, honestly I don't see the point of having it all when I can watch the same video in the same quality without having a giant cabinet to keep them in. But he has the money to buy every movie he likes so he has it.
How can you not care for DVD's features like commentary, documentary, outtakes, etc. As well as a nice official dvd cover.
Use Netflix to watch movie, if it sucks don't buy a physical copy. In the end, you'll have a library of good movies.
As cool as having a collection of DVD movies is I don't want to buy more then a few only to have them be in quality outdated by BluRay's predecessors.
DVDs and Blu-Rays for me. I always get a feel of gratification whenever I walk past my collection.
Isn't that illegal?
No. Making backups of things you've legally bought is protected. [editline]4th May 2011[/editline] As for my personal input I like owning a physical copy.
How can you not care for DVD's features like commentary, documentary, outtakes, etc. As well as a nice official dvd cover.
I'm talking about making full copies of a dvd including the commentary etc. Just rip the .iso and burn it to another dvd, the process takes like 5 minutes of actual work.
