Nope, not Paris. We're talking about Hartford, the pride of Connecticut. The capital of the nutmeg state has more economic activity per person than Geneva, Paris and basically the rest of the world's great cities, according to a new report by the Brookings Institution.
Only Zurich, Oslo and San Jose, California beat out Hartford.
Hartford's GDP per capita, $76,510, placed fourth among the 300 cities in the report. Geneva ($74,580), Paris ($70,760) and others placed just below the Connecticut capital in Brookings' list.
Brookings used gross domestic product, a broad measure of economic activity, divided by a city's population as a key factor when it ranks metro areas for overall economic performance. GDP per capita is often thought of as a good gauge of the standard of living in a place.
Hartford is known as the insurance capital of the world. The insurance industry generates a lot of cash and does not require many workers, creating a high GDP per capita figure. Business and financial services, a broad jobs category that includes insurance, makes up almost 20% of employment in Hartford, but nearly half of the region's economy, according to Joe Parilla, an author of the Brookings report.

Goes to show, just because you're a popular city, doesn't mean you have a high GDP
Read Hartford as Hertford, man that was confusing
That list seems to be missing many important cities.
Frankfurt, the financial centre of Germany, for example has a GDP per capita of 82.700€ ($94000) or Wolfsburg, which is smaller but home of VW, with 92.600€ ($105000).
Can't say I would have guessed that San Jose is higher than San Francisco.
Woo San Jose! Not surprised to be honest since its literally the heart of silicon valley
Perth?
Perth?
I would have thought Canberra for sure, but Perth?
And what's the highest GDP after factoring in cost of living?
Man I never would have thought Hartford would be on this list. I'd imagine it's got something to do with it having all those insurance companies. Every time I've been through Hartford I've always just seen the shittier areas I suppose. It does also have a really high crime rate (only second behind New Haven in CT) so that seems to be a pretty good indicator that it has a good amount of poverty.
Hartford is on there for the same reason boston and san jose are; proximity to super high paying industries and institutions.
Surprised San Jose is there, but with a shitload of apple stores opening in the surrounding cities it makes more sense.
That's nice, but Oslo is a shithole now IMO. Lived there for 3 years and moved away to never come back. I prefer Bergen.

Guessing Macau.
San Jose represent, with companies like Apple, Google, NVidia, basically all big tech firms around here, it's no surprise we're that high

I'm not great when it comes to stuff like this. But wouldn't it be because WA has a hell of a lot of mining going on?
