Ukraine’s Berkut riot police force has been disbanded, acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced on his Facebook page. The details of the newly signed order will be announced on Wednesday.
http://rt.com/news/kiev-clashes-rioters-police-571/
Hope they weren't all just made unemployed.
i hope they weren't all just made criminals, the police were only doing their orders and trying to stay alive, some should be on trial like those snipers who were shooting medics, but hopefully there isn't repercussions from this

So long as they're fair towards them (as you said, they were doing their job, whether we or they like it) and don't just brand them all murderers. The snipers should definitively be punished severely however, since they were in no way in any immediate threat. That's why they're called snipers, after all.
The riot police seems like egotistical morons who would rather keep their paycheck than act like human beings.
There wouldn't be much "riot police" if they acted like human beings though. Professionals don't just stick to paychecks, but to do their job. Shooting unarmed protesters was a crime on their part, in line with apparent "dissapearing" some of the protesters but everything else - not so much, nothing outside of their professional area.
Wouldn't it be better to keep them, instead of disbanding them?
Wouldn't it be better to keep them then disbanded them?
While I can see why they would want to disband the group, I'd personally keep them, because if something happens, these exact people would protect the new government just as hard as they did previous one. Keeping seasoned loyal professionals is better than hiring completely new groups.
I think they will probably reform the Bekruit with members who are more loyal to the current government.
The 'they were just doing their job' attitude is really backwards don't you think? They are human beings, not robots, and should act accordingly.
The 'they were just doing their job' attitude is really backwards don't you think? They are human beings, not robots, and should act accordingly.
Ok so they're human. You see an angry mob coming toward you with batons, molotovs and possibly guns do you just let them come? You and your friends have been bombarded by fireworks and molotovs for the last week or so. Some of them have been injured, some permanently. No all the police believed in the protesters cause so wouldn't just want to join them. If a mob did similar in the UK or US they would take some serious measures.
Or just move then all into a similar unit with a different name seeing as I doubt many (western) Ukrainians would trust someone in a Berkut uniform after what happened during the protests.
The 'they were just doing their job' attitude is really backwards don't you think? They are human beings, not robots, and should act accordingly.
They "should" act like they're supposed to by their contract. They're soldiers of a special law enforcement unit. They weren't "just" doing their job. They were doing their job, period, no excuses have to be made.
So I heard rumors that Berkut took their equipment and started acting as a Pro-Russian separatist group. Is there any truth to this?
So I heard rumors that Berkut took their equipment and started acting as a Pro-Russian separatist group. Is there any truth to this?
Do you really think that someone has any trustworthy information on this here? All that facepunchers can say would just be another rumor.
That's why I specifically said it was a rumour, I haven't read anything solid about it happening, just one guy somewhere said it. [editline]28th February 2014[/editline] I haven't been following the past couple days, so I wasn't sure all that has happened since Yanukovich fled and a pro-EU Government took over.
That's why I specifically said it was a rumour, I haven't read anything solid about it happening, just one guy somewhere said it.
I think it was in the other thread, seems like a guy wildly speculating if you ask me. Caught up on the notion of them being some kind of pro-russian private army rather than a riot police unit.
Imo making a few apologises, gifting stuff to Berkut, promoting some of their memberers and giving them some money would be a better move. You don't want a big amount of military-trained people to hate you for life. Instead you better tame the angry dog if you can and it will protect you from the next revolution.
Russia's interior ministry is inviting former Ukrainian policemen who leave Ukraine to join their ranks in the Russian provinces. They can sign up after acquiring Russian citizenship, it says. During the violent unrest this winter, Ukrainian police officers, and especially the elite Berkut unit, were accused of crimes against protesters, including murder.

The 'they were just doing their job' attitude is really backwards don't you think? Apparently, stopping people from lighting you up with molotovs is police brutality, while beating an officer to a bloody pulp is a revolution. At the end of the day, it's just people killing people, no matter what cause they do it for.

We'll never forget you, Berkut... From the neighboring thread. Berkut units disagree with the government's decision. But unlike Yanukovich previously, they actively disagree and take over Crimean checkpoints http://en.ria.ru/world/20140228/187977678/Russia-Hurries-to-Issue-Passports-for-Ukraines-Former-Riot.html
i was asking for proof of berkut shooting medics
Weird. When I read your post it didn't have a quote. Opps.
