• Children of Lesbian Parents Do Better than Their Peers
The children of lesbian parents outscore their peers on academic and social tests, according to results from the longest-running study of same-sex families. The researchers behind the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study say the results should change attitudes to adoption of children by gay and lesbian couples, which is prohibited in some parts of the US. The finding is based on 78 children who were all born to lesbian couples who used donor insemination to become pregnant and were interviewed and tested at age 17. The new tests have left no doubt as to the success of these couples as parents, says Nanette Gartrell at the University of California, San Francisco, who has worked on the study since it began in 1986. Compared with a group of control adolescents born to heterosexual parents with similar educational and financial backgrounds, the children of lesbian couples scored better on academic and social tests and lower on measures of rule-breaking and aggression. A previous study of same-sex parenting, based on long-term health data, also found no difference in the health of children in either group. "This confirms what most developmental scientists have suspected," says Stephen Russell, a sociologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "Kids growing up with same-sex parents fare just as well as other kids." The results should be considered by those who oppose the right of gay and lesbian couples to adopt children, adds Gartrell. A handful of states, including Florida, prohibit same-sex or unmarried couples from adopting, although many of the state laws are being challenged in the courts. "It's a great tragedy in this country," says Gartrell. "There are so many children who are available for adoption but cannot be adopted by same-sex couples." Over 100,000 children are awaiting adoption in the US, says the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, a research and advocacy organisation based in New York. The institute estimates that just 4 per cent of all adopted children – around 65,000 – live with gay or lesbian parents, despite research suggesting that same-sex couples may be more willing than heterosexual couples to adopt.
Source Seriously, why can't they adopt yet? It's absolutely ridiculous.
Because ignorance and prejudice is pretty common. People need to start minding their own business.
The question was rhetorical.
I don't care what these tests say, unless you tested it with a billion people, you'd never get an accurate test enough to confirm something as huge as this. I do however care about the fact, that lesbian couples can't adopt because someone doesn't like the idea, and I find it complete bullshit. Everyone should have the right to adopt.
But you said seriously
Nothing new to be honest.
Fun fact: Studies show that, while the majority of Americans find homosexual/lesbian relationships immoral, the same majority also believe there shouldn't be laws prohibiting anything based on sexuality.
78 children in each testing group is pretty large amount if you ask me. The fact that it says the tests "Have Left No Doubt" also says something.
Don't sperm donors have to have Bachelor Degrees and shit or they can't do it?
Don't sperm donors have to have Bachelor Degrees and shit or they can't do it?
That makes a lot of sense. Don't tell me you haven't thought about making a quick buck by jacking off into a jar.
I know a guy who has a lesbian mother and gay father. He's quite smart.
Do better in what? Cooking?
Do better in what? Cooking?
Did you read the thread at all?
I know a guy who has a lesbian mother and gay father. He's quite smart.
What, how does that work?
I know a guy who has a lesbian mother and gay father. He's quite smart.
What explain
This isn't news I heard this ages ago.... oh wait that was homosexual males.
I know a guy who has a lesbian mother and gay father. He's quite smart.
I know a girl who has four Jewish lesbian mothers. The sperm donor was Italian.
Well, that's just awesome. If you're a bureaucratic fuckwad and get them taken away from their parents, they'll grow up and drop a logic bomb on you.
What, how does that work?
Parents often times stay together to protect their children, and many people don't realize their homosexuality (usually due to repression) until their adult life.
Take that, social conservatives [editline]03:36PM[/editline]
Do better in what? Cooking?
Try saying that to a couple of huge bulldykes and see what happens to you
My friend is raised by lesbians, he's the smartest man I know.
Sucks to be Ross.
Well mother fucking duh. Perhaps because there is no such thing as an "unplanned" pregnancy among these couples. You are bound to love and care for kids if you decide to artificially inseminate yourself.
What explain
His mother and father probably split up, and then they both found out they were gay. It's not that difficult a concept. The father of one of my friends is gay. I don't know the exact story, but apparently his parents broke up when he was young because his mother was an abusive meth-addict (who tried on multiple occasions to kill him), so he went to live with his father, who is currently in a domestic relationship with another man. Not that uncommon, really.
It might also that they're both mothers and usually the mother takes care of the kid more than the father. Or maybe not.
I'd want to have 2 mothers.
Let's see. mother + father = Okay mother + Abusive father = Okay (Reverse this one too I don't feel like typing it out) mother + Workaholic father = Okay (Reverse this one too I don't feel like typing it out) mother = Okay father = Okay mother + dorm mate (female) = Okay father + father's brother = Okay mother + mother = Holy jesus the kid's gonna turn out horribly. father + father = Holy jesus the kid's gonna turn out horribly. Honestly, these people have no fucking reasoning for outlawing them from adopting. Just like there's no logical reasoning for keeping pot illegal. And just like there's no logical reasoning for gay marriage to not be legal everywhere. Finally, no reason for polygamy to be illegal either. Sometimes the government is just really fucking stupid.
I wish people would stop linking two things that show correlation. High fat content and I think it's more likely that open lesbians are slightly more educated and outspoken than weak minded closet-lesbians, or your typical regular family, so if smart people raise kids, the kids tend to be smart :downs:

Lesbians are more likely to pass these traits on.
What, how does that work?
I think it was like a "Do me a favour" thing. Sort of like a sperm donor that sticks around.
