I CAN'T be the only one around here who loves baseball, and it's baseball season, so I decided that there needs to be a thread on it. This might look a little like the NBA thread, because I've never made a sports thread before and Cpl.Shepherd did a good job on it, so I'm going to follow the same format, but for baseball. I apologize ahead of time for this OP being shitty as can be, I've never done this before. What it is (Also from Wikipedia): Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players. The aim is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four bases arranged at the corners of a 90-foot diamond. Players on the batting team take turns hitting against the pitcher of the fielding team, which tries to prevent runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on the batting team can stop at any of the bases and later advance via a teammate's hit or other means. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. One turn at bat for each team constitutes an inning and nine innings make up a professional game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.Evolving from older bat-and-ball games, an early form of baseball was being played in England by the mid-eighteenth century. This game was brought by immigrants to North America, where the modern version developed. By the late nineteenth century, baseball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States. Baseball is now popular in North America, parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean, and parts of East Asia. In the United States and Canada, professional Major League Baseball (MLB) teams are divided into the National League (NL) and American League (AL), each with three divisions: East, West, and Central. The major league champion is determined by playoffs that culminate in the World Series. Five teams make the playoffs from each league: the three regular season division winners, plus two wild card teams. Baseball is the leading team sport in both Japan and Cuba, and the top level of play is similarly split between two leagues: Japan's Central League and Pacific League; Cuba's West League and East League. In the National and Central leagues, the pitcher is required to bat, per the traditional rules. In the American, Pacific, and both Cuban leagues, there is a tenth player, a designated hitter, who bats for the pitcher. Each top-level team has a farm system of one or more minor league teams. How it's played: It's kind of complicated and hard to explain, so here. http://baseball.about.com/od/thebasics/a/basebasicrules.htm MLB Teams: Excuse the Montreal Expos, they are no longer a team in the MLB, but I can't find a 100% accurate picture of all the logos. I will edit this as needed after it's posted. Go Braves!
Baseball da best.
I can't sit down and watch a whole baseball game unless it's close in the last few innings, but I do flip back and forth for almost every Braves game. I think it's fun to keep up with, and it's even fun to watch a game live, in person. [editline]9th April 2013[/editline] Also the team images you included has a tile for the Expos and the Diamondbacks are on there twice.
Justin Upton's lookin sexy Even when nobody else is showing up, that guy hits a bomb every game
I saw his third home run in person. The guy is an absolute beast.
Most boring sport.
Most boring sport.
Let me acquaint you with golf.
Most boring sport.
Then show yourself out, boring guy. [editline]9th April 2013[/editline] Nice job spamming dumb ratings, too.
Hopefully the Red Sox are going to have a better year and go to the playoffs
This thread made me realize we don't have a Sports section under Hobbies.
This thread made me realize we don't have a Sports section under Hobbies.
Lil Nooblet made a thread asking for one, then Garry pretty much said we don't need one, yet, we've got sections like Urban Exploration which never get more than 5 viewers at a time. We definitely need one, for those of us on FP who actually like sports and physical activity. (Sorry)
This thread made me realize we don't have a Sports section under Hobbies.
I can't tell if this is an original thought or a reference to this thread.
Well, looks like nooblet changed his name. There you go.
Hopefully the Red Sox are going to have a better year and go to the playoffs
If they keep playing the way they are then they'll definitely be in the running. The pitching staff is looking pretty tight with the exception of Lackey (though I'm hopeful), but then again, he's not really been that good here. Also Doubront needs to be able to get past the fifth... otherwise tight as a tiger.
being from new york, i have a buy-in to the world's most hated fan club. that said i'm really not having a fun time as a yankee fan this season.
Let's go Cubs! :suicide:
Let's go Cubs! :suicide:
How did those 3 losses and 2 comebacks feel? Let's go Braves!
How did those 3 losses and 2 comebacks feel? Let's go Braves!
Don't be too excited, Marmol has got the be the worst closer in the league [editline]9th April 2013[/editline] I mean he's got an ERA of 15.43
I'm just playing, man, no hard feelings, and yeah, Marmol is definitely fucked, and gone now.
I know, wasn't expecting anything from the Cubs this season anyway.
Let's go Cubs! :suicide:
What? I thought NFL-wise you were a Broncos fan [editline]9th April 2013[/editline] So Heyward just plain got benched? Damn
suddenly find myself wondering where Dougz is from
Haha, this will throw you all off then. I'm from California, started liking the Broncos when I watched John Elway win the SB in 98/99. Cubs are because my dad is a Chicago fan, and I grew up watching the Cubs and surrounded by Cubs fans in my family. And the Celtics, at first it was to spite Lakers fans, but now I'm a huge fan of Rondo, and still like the Celtics.
I've been watching baseball on and off for the most part, didn't really watch more than half a season's worth of games until the Athletics made their incredible run last year. If I had the time and resources to play baseball, I totally would go out and do it, but all of my friends primarily play basketball as do I.
