About 75 scientists may have been accidentally exposed to anthrax at a US government health facility. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the scientists in Atlanta, Georgia, have been given antibiotics and are being monitored for signs of illness. The potential exposure occurred at a high-security lab "after established safety practices were not followed," the statement said. Samples of Bacillus anthracis, or anthrax, were being prepared for research at lower-security labs "to yield new means of detecting dangerous pathogens in environmental samples," it said Source: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-06-20/75-us-scientists-exposed-to-anthrax/5537774
how the fuck can you screw up this badly?
"to yield new means of detecting dangerous pathogens in environmental samples,"
Well given the local human population now has been exposed to anthrax I'd say you fucked that up pretty bad
Here's what a level 4 lab looks like
how can you fuck up this badly "woopsies"
all it takes is for one person handling anthrax to get some on their clothes or have a suit puncture and walk around the facility for 75 people to be "possibly exposed", most of whom he won't have even come into contact with but came into contact with people he came across too

Another 75 were also sadly exposed to Metallica's latest album
I wonder if the OP's avatar is one of the 75 scientists

How do you not follow safety procedures when handling anthrax?
Accident or opportunity? You decide!
Complacency. "oh i've done this 600 times" is a dangerous statement indeed.
Yeah, but if I were in that job that statement would be followed by "...but it sure beats being exposed to anthrax". :v:
Keep in mind that these are scientists, who are sitting around like "man this shit occurs in the soil, I bet I can cut a few corners and still be safe". And now you wouldn't sleep at night.. the best and the brightest of humanity are hunting for ways to cut corners.
In one of my second year labs the Ph.D student who was taking our lab group wasn't wearing gloves and I asked him about it while he was demonstrating what we were going to do. He took a plastic pipette, filled it with... whatever we were using (I forget what exactly), stared me dead in the eyes, and squirted it all over the tip of one of his fingers. The skin went all white and looked 'powdery' (the chemical was a defatting agent) and he told the whole class quite clearly not to follow his poor example. Apparently by the time you're in the second last or last year of your Ph.D you give up on procedure and start looking for as many corners as possible to cut because there's never enough fucking time. That was... interesting. Thank fuck I don't intend to really do much with the nanotech half of my double degree post the end of this year. Physics all of the way. Chemists and biologists are fucking deranged if you ask me. Give me class 4 lasers any day over hydrofluoric acid or anthrax.
Oh, I just thought that it was about a group of scientists who listened to "Anthrax" :v:

News update: CDC: Possible US anthrax cases rise to 84
In a statement, the CDC said the anthrax samples were moved from a high-security lab to a lower-security one at their Atlanta headquarters. "Workers, believing the samples were inactivated, were not wearing adequate personal protective equipment while handling the material," the agency said. "The unintentional exposure was discovered June 13 when the original bacterial plates were gathered for disposal and B. anthracis colonies [live bacteria] were found on the plates."

Fifty-four of the 84 identified employees had been treated at the CDC's health clinic by Thursday morning, with two refusing a course of antibiotics. Twenty-seven employees also began the anthrax vaccine.
**SOURCE** Oh, I'd love to hear why those two are refusing antibiotics.
dr thrax is at it again

I bet if I gave a good sneeze on one of those things, atleast some of the particles would be blown by air up my hose when it is connected.
