• US bans Middle East and North African international passengers from carrying larger electronics
Passengers on some U.S.-bound foreign airline flights will have to check electronic devices larger than a cell phone once U.S. authorities formalize a new ban in response to an unspecified terrorism threat, U.S. officials told Reuters on Monday. A source said the rule would cover around eight to 10 foreign airlines. A separate government official confirmed an Associated Press report that the ban will affect 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Reuters reported earlier the ban would include airlines based in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The officials did not name the other countries. The White House declined to comment. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, David Lapan, said the agency has "no comment on potential security precautions" and would provide an update when appropriate.
Source (Reuters)
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said extremists were seeking "innovative methods" to bring down jets. Bombs could be hidden in laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games, it said.
Source (BBC) :terrists:
This is going to cripple anyone going on business trips to the States from those countries.
Look at the list of airlines that are banned. It's pretty much every Middle Eastern and African major competitor with US carriers, which are losing ground because they offer a shit service. They're legislating indirectly against the free market by trying to inconvenience the users of the competing service, basically using their lawmaking powers to damage opposing business. If they don't take the US to a trade court over this it'll be a major coup in the style of the Apple/Samsung 'rounded rectangle' lawsuits.

I had a quick cursory look, and all I could see was Delta flying to Jordan, which is due to be terminated by the end of the year. Not that I agree with it, seems kinda pointless to me, but they can still carry the devices, it just has to be put in checked baggage.
At a guess I'd say they don't fly there because the opposition provides a better service. You'll notice that across the world, not many airlines fly into destinations such as the UAE because they do a great job of serving the routes themselves. I could be wrong, of course. It could just be more utterly retarded Trump-fuelled fuckery.
This is pointless. If you want to spot such a bomb, you would want it seperate through the x-ray. If you still don't trust it, just check it for explosives, and done. Having it in a checked in luggage won't mean shit if it's remote detonated. It wouldn't blow up the aircraft, but rather start a fire in the cargo hold, making everything even more dangerous. If you fit a bomb inside a laptop or other device, chances are you only have enough explosives to make a hole in the hull, which an aircraft can take. Now, though, those airports will have to either apply that rule to all passengers, or keep US-bound passengers away from the rest, which will cost A LOT.

Still it's not exactly going to help, particularly if presentations need to be prepared etc.
Awesome! I feel so much safer from a non-existent threat.

Literally the only way for it to become affordable is to make a code-share agreement with one of the companies part-owned by the Government there, like Emirate or Etihad.
I'm from Jordan, and I take my laptop with me everywhere I go; so I guess I won't be coming to the US next summer, which is what I was planning. :(
I'm from Jordan, and I take my laptop with me everywhere I go; so I guess I won't be coming to the US next summer, which is what I was planning. :(
Wow. Terrible that you can't let go of your laptop for less than a day
Wow. Terrible that you can't let go of your laptop for less than a day
What is work
Wow. Terrible that you can't let go of your laptop for less than a day
Wow, it's almost like people use modern electronic devices to perform work tasks.
Wow. Terrible that you can't let go of your laptop for less than a day
I know right? Surely this isn't a fruitless feelgood ban to pander to those that don't understand the real issues at hand or how terrorists tend to take advantage of the young and more impressionable, or repressed people that feel they have nothing else to go to. Or should we let another meaningless ban slide because it allows people to feel as if something is getting done? Because airplane bombs have always been a terrorists master plan.
Wow. Terrible that you can't let go of your laptop for less than a day
You have a blatant example in front of you why this ban is stupid and you mock that person. How ignorant can you be?
What is work
TERROR work.
My questions are: has there been anything in place to stop bombs disguised as electronics ever until now? Have they been a problem?

It's just going to be checked with your luggage, and not carry-on.
I know right? but phones are still ok right? are those galaxy note 7 jokes funny anymore?
You can still bring it. It's just going to be checked with your luggage, and not carry-on. "fruitless feelgood ban" "meaningless ban"
Yes. Guess I'm an idiot for not taking things at face value and actually looking at where we've been and where it is we're heading, all things considered. Thankfully I have the DHS to allow me to feel safe and snug at home, protected from the scary things outside of it.
You can still bring it. It's just going to be checked with your luggage, and not carry-on. "fruitless feelgood ban" "meaningless ban"
glad everyone gets punished because of a couple of fucktards, great work screwing over businessmen and women from those nations bc more than likely the TSA will go ape shit through laptop computers requesting passwords and searching through peoples history to try and find something remotely criminalising
You can still bring it. It's just going to be checked with your luggage, and not carry-on. "fruitless feelgood ban" "meaningless ban"
What about people who don't check baggage? Not everyone needs to for short trips because not much luggage is needed. Will they now need to pay extra to cover the cost to stow away just a small laptop? When i traveled internationally for work I literally just took a small carry on and my messenger bag.
Okay so this isn't just some racist shit like the Muslim ban; just the timing is unfortunate. The UK is to do the same thing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39343971 This is still retarded. How does putting it in checked luggage stop it being a bomb? All it means is RIP thousands of devices because of the conduct of terminal baggage handlers. No joke, I have put packets of digestive biscuits and shit like that in my checked luggage, snugly fitted so it won't move, and when it's reached the other side and I've unpacked they've been reduced to sand. Two questions: How the fuck? And what would that treatment do to a business laptop?
Gotta stop those dirty terrorists from using their Allahu Laptops from blowing up our planes and airports! Yet another feel good measure that won't prevent anything and will just piss off the guys who need them for actual legitimate purposes. And this isnt saying what could happen considering the quality of baggage handlers at most terminals, we've had electronics damaged before in transit.
Just retarded now

It's also stupid to act like checking your laptop in your luggage is an insurmountable obstacle to international travel. Did you three just not read what Rocketsnail was replying to, or are you actually saying you would rather cancel international travel than be parted with your computer for a few hours?

It could be for college, work or just because he wants to. It doesn't matter and he doesn't need to justify it. Why is how often he carries his personal belongings and what they are any business of yours? Why should that be taken away from him for no good reason?

I myself would be fairly bloody annoyed and discouraged going to x country if I had to deal with a stupid inconvience just because Im travelling from y country.
Awesome! I feel so much safer from a non-existent threat.
Sometimes I wonder if malicious people read articles like this (where they say things such as "they could hide bombs in laptops!" and the like) and they think to themselves "Man, that's a great idea..."
