"i'll cook you borsh with your gas" - ok, you lost me there.
I agree that Russia is absulutely overstepping their boundaries and that Ukraine never provoked military action of that scale against them, I believe that what Russia is doing is an unjustified attack but I can't get over the stupid, oversimplified black and white picture that this song paints. Having one side represented by a screaming cartoony madman and the other by an innocent, gentle man in white is no way to portray any conflict. It's propaganda. Not WRONG in its core message and possibly not intended as propaganda (although the 'hooray for EU' at the end seemed like shoehoring a political message in), but at least suffering from the same core problems as actual propaganda. And I do get that Russia's political actions can easily be seen as straight up evil and that Ukraine is undeserving of warfare against them, but you should never boil down any conflict to "Good guys good, Bad guys bad". It's a terrible, way to reflect or even understand reality.
Conflicts like this and their impact are huge and oversimplifying them is dangerous, people should get all the necessary information they can get their hands on, not just "Them's the bad guys, thats all I need to know", which is the kind of comically oversimplified thinking that propaganda works on. Supporting the most superficial of opinions, the most common denominator and not providing any additional information or even encouraging further information.
And I do agree, this dumb song gets one thing right and that is: Russian actions against Ukraine bad, poor Ukraine no deserve. But there is just a lot more to understand about any conflict than who you should feel negatively about and who you should feel sorry for. These are just first-impression simple emotional reactions that anyone can make their minds up about in one half-remembered news article, its a good way to get people to agree with you and that's really all they've done here. Support and encourage the viewers feelings on the most superficial level. This is about as good a song as "Chicken nuggets are yummy". Sure, it's correct, but what value has the message other than being relevant?
Well, any music made by a member of one group wronged by another will generally be boiled down to good/evil. It's funny though because the Russian sections of the song actually reflect some Russian nationalist songs that I've heard pretty well. :v:
So yeah it's "propaganda" (albeit not government sanctioned), but the message isn't wrong, just general.
As a song I really like it.
But fuck me it's ridiculously one sided, showing off Pro-Russians as evil warmongering vatniks and Ukrainians as angels.
