lots of blue/orange contrast though. it does look really nice though. but the very bland color contrast did add to the feeling of "ugh". when he flew it didn't feel as bright or hopeful as it should've. it was always cloudy, even when the sun was shining directly on the dude's face. didn't help that the movie had the most weirdly fucked up pacing ever.
I'm a huge Superman fan and I tried to like MoS but the only thing that I truly like was the small amounts of fight scenes. Mostly involving Faora-Ul because the simple fact that it kind of utilized the super speed that Kryptonians have, and I think it looked good. But this video is a real eye opener to how dark they really made it.
I agree that Superman should be flying into blue skies.
The properly colored shots looks so much better, I would love to see it without all the contrast. It just isn't Superman with the constant foreboding shadows I agree.
I thought the movie was pretty good don't get me wrong but with proper colors it just makes it feel, well a lot more like Superman should.
one issue with movies today is... instead of making the scene itself dark and moody in contrast they use effects after the fact to make it so
so instead of a nicely properly dark and gritty looking scene you get this shitty weird gray effect that makes you want to vomit because it looks like your screen is broken
I think there should be visual effects focus groups for movies where they show a scene and cycle through a few to see which one they all prefer.
PRODUCTION NOTE: We're big fans of both Superman and the film Man of Steel. That's why this was a fun project. But Superman isn't just a brand. He's a worldwide icon that has lasted 77 years. When you make a Superman movie, and not every kid walking out of the theater wishes they were Superman... you've done something wrong. We're simply asking questions.
I don't even think there were kids in the theater when I went to see Man of Steel, which is really depressing now that I think about it.
Went from Zac Snyder to Michael Bay.
I don't get it. Zack Snyder did Watchmen, and that's a much grittier world than superman and yet the movie was pretty colorful. Dark overall, sure, but there were a lot of bright colors that popped out, a la something like Blade Runner. Superman just looked like they cranked the contrast and saturation sliders down 50%.
Still can't get over the fact that the final fight scene has on-par destruction with Godzilla's fight in San Fran
Honestly they were just capitalizing on the successes of Nolan's gritty Batman movies and thought that it would work with Superman too.
But Nolan's movies had color. They didn't have unnecessary saturation and contrast.
Damn these make original look like utter shit. Not every "restoration" is great, that's a given, but some of the better ones make me question why the fuck did they go with such heavy filtering in the first place.

So uh, broken screens make you vomit? You alright?
Did they just regrade 8-bit 4:2:0 footage with H.264 compression on it? You've got to watch out for banding and artifacts on that.

it's just for examples, it's not like it's for a production release (or they have access to raw sources)
Holy balls I didn't realize MoS was so gray.
But Nolan's movies had color. They didn't have unnecessary saturation and contrast.
Yeah, when Nolan and Pfister's movies were dark it was intentional. There wasn't that much color grading, the darkness and grayness came from intentional choices like settings and wardrobes.
Consider the oft-compared interrogation scenes. The Dark Knight doesn't really seem to use much color grading, see how the background ranges from blue to yellow and the flesh tones seem natural. The darkness is brought on by the characters - Batman wears black, and the Joker's colors are more muted (mottled, messy makeup rather than solid white skin, yellow-green dyed hair rather than bright green hair, darker suit tones). Note that neither of them are washed-out though - Batman's belt is still gold and the Joker's suit has deep, rich greens and purples.

Now compare that to Man of Steel. True, Superman's suit is blue and Lois is wearing gray/powder-blue clothes, but this just feels very washed-out. Look at the yellow and red of Superman's outfit, or Amy Adam's hair.

Cool. Hope they do Sin City next. Boy did they mess that up!
Btw the people who made this do know that this is in Africa right?

Yeah this part made me say, "oh fuck off"
But I really hate that people are blaming Zack Snyder for the bland colors in Man of Steel. Like, you do know that the director isn't the only person making the movie, right? There's studio execs with their heads up their asses, and there's also studio execs with their heads up their asses, and I nearly forgot, there's the studio execs with their heads up their asses.
For me, the biggest reason Man of Steel didn't really work was because the studio execs wanted Nolan and decided to go for David S. Goyer and pimp him as 'the writer from the Dark Knight trilogy'- even when his only writing credit on any of the Dark Knight movies was Batman Begins (and Nolan has said several times how he rewrote Goyer's script)... that and a story credit on the sequels because he did an initial treatment that Nolan also rewrote.
David S. Goyer. You know, the guy who said 'Martian Manhunter can't work on the DC Universe because he has a silly name', 'She-Hulk was made so the Hulk could have someone to fuck' (which is dumb in on itself, even if you forget She-Hulk is the Hulk's cousin) and then asked who knew about Martian Manhunter only to immediately ask those people if they ever had sex in their lives.
Luckily, the guy behind Argo rewrote the Batman vs Superman script, so maybe, just maybe, there's gonna be a glimmer of hope under all that color grading.
the colour makes it look better, but getting rid of the washed-out, overly grey colour grading won't change the fact that the movie was pretty awful

I was so disappointed in the movie when it came out. Watchmen and 300 are (at least in my opinion) both really good movies with very distinct visual styles.
When I saw Men of Steel it was just a mess of unbelievable bad pacing, out-of-order flashbacks for seemingly no reason and bad color correction. It's far from a bad movie, but I expected so much more.
I don't even think there were kids in the theater when I went to see Man of Steel, which is really depressing now that I think about it.
I also don't remember kids in the theater when I went to see it. What I actually remember is the theater was filled with senior citizens. Like, hardly any seats were open. It was kind of heartwarming to wonder if everyone in here was an original superman fan when he was a new character.

The movie still looks washed out, but turns out they made it seem worse than it is.
yeah the movie isnt nearly as dark as it was in the op video
did they just get a really shitty copy or did they fuck with it to make it seem a lot worse? that's pretty shitty
What annoyed me the most in man of steel wasn't really the lack of color as much as it was the crushed blacks everywhere. It makes the movie really difficult to look at because too much of the screen is practically pitch black.

I have a well light screen and even it looks like the brightness was turned down to me

Last i checked, DE:HR has color. Mostly black and gold, but still.

Last I checked, black wasn't a colour.
