• DIY book holder from a box of shoes.

So I'm really not one crafty kind of person, not even artistic to say the truth, but this morning I got really pissed at how short my desk is and how I can't fit a book and my keyboard on it at the same time, and also had problems reading from my book when it was at the side of my keyboard. So I sat down (actually, I was seated the whole time), saw a cardboard shoe box on my desk (which I had no idea where it came from, my mum must have put it there for no reason) and said 'fuck' in my head, and started tearing it apart. Sadly, it didn't occur to me to take photos during the process, so I cannot bring you any footage of the cardboard box prior to its evolution to book stand. So here's what I came up with, using just my scissors, some tape and glue. Loads of glue, there's probably more glue than cardboard on this thing. That's probably because I suck at anything involving the use of my hands anyway, so I use tons of glue to make up for that. But anyway this thing ended up quite strong. It can hold quite heavy books without signs of collapsing over their weight.. well, for now. Here are some pictures of the final product: [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2951174/iPhone/Photo 31-08-11 21 34 28.jpeg[/thumb] [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2951174/iPhone/Photo%2031-08-11%2021%2034%2037.jpeg[/thumb] As you can see in the picture above, it has 5 supports under the part where the book sits. They're all made of cardboard, and really, I didn't expect them to come out as solid as they did when I put them in. And here's how it looks from behind: [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2951174/iPhone/Photo%2031-08-11%2021%2034%2053.jpeg[/thumb] [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2951174/iPhone/Photo%2031-08-11%2021%2035%2010.jpeg[/thumb] From the picture above you can see the awful mess of glue I made in there. At least it's stable anyway. I'm gonna leave it overnight and check on its status in the morning, I hope it holds. Oh, I might make a tutorial if anybody's interested.
Looks nice As a suggestion you could enclose the thing with more cardboard, so the insides won't be visible, unless you purposely left then visible to show it off of course

I think the front supports look good though. Should I give it a coating of paint?
Please make a tutorial. I have some shoe boxes here and nothing to do with them.
[QUOTE=Mr. Epicness;32045061]Please make a tutorial. I have some shoe boxes here and nothing to do with them.[/QUOTE]Okay, sure. I'm going to have to see if this works with rectangular boxes, though, since this one was almost square. We'll see. [editline]31st August 2011[/editline] Just finished testing it with a book for a few hours and it held very well. there are no signs of breaking.
That's pretty cool.
I left it with a book on overnight and it held perfectly, no signs of damage anywhere. I found that there's a problem where the early pages of a book won't hold open and they'll turn instead, but that's because of the actual book really. Here's the solution: [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2951174/iPhone/Photo%2001-09-11%2011%2042%2027%20%28HDR%29.jpeg[/thumb]

[QUOTE=-n3o-;32072279]Like hell your not a crafty one. Well done man.[/QUOTE]I didn't think it was that good :v:
[QUOTE=TerabyteS_;32072455]I didn't think it was that good :v:[/QUOTE] I've been intending to do something like this forever, but it never occurred to me to just use cardboard :v: Tutorial please.
that pattern looks cool so i wouldn't cover it with paint. it's a good use for a shoe box. nice job man
