Virtually no rain for weeks has led some river levels to drop as the UK becomes parched in the heatwave. And with no significant showers expected for weeks, the Met Office says his month could beat the record set in 1955 when only an inch (30mm) fell n the driest July since 1766. Sarah Holland of the Met Office said: "Early figures show it has been warmer, drier and sunnier than usual. "We have had 9mm of rain in the UK and 4mm in England, that is well below average for the time of year. Although it is too early to say definitely, we could be looking at the driest July on record.” Reservoirs and groundwater levels are healthy but the Environment Agency has urged consumers to “use water wisely”. Head of water resources Trevor Bishop said: “Last year’s exceptionally wet summer and autumn has left us in a fairly good position, with most rivers, reservoirs and underground water stores around normal for the time of year. “Some river levels are dropping as a result of the hot, dry spell. “We would urge everyone to continue to use water wisely, to protect water supplies and the environment.” Water firms said there are no plans to bring in hosepipe bans. However, the very warm weather has sparked a 15 per cent rise in demand for tap water in London and the South-east. Thames Water’s nine million customers have been using 400 million litres a day on top of the usual 2.6 billion litres. Spokesman for the company Jerry White said: “While we are a million miles away from a drought, our treatment works are being cranked up a notch to keep pace with the spikes in demand.”
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/415664/Britain-s-driest-July-for-247-years-Households-urged-be-wise-with-water
And yet no hosepipe ban, we must of had quite a bit of rain during these last few months. Edit: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23341698 Those abroad may want to read this, gives you a better idea as to why we have problems with hot weather.
You can tell, lots of the grass around is drying up and dying. But hey I'm loving this weather.
I actually haven't noticed it hasn't been raining for so long.
Meanwhile my parents just put up the fucking pool.
247 years? HAH brits are so soft in my country we haven't had rain since the neolithic age goml pussies ;)
And yet no hosepipe ban, we must of had quite a bit of rain during these last few months.
The ground has been completely saturated with water for the past 2 years . It explains why places have flooded so easily - water cannot be absorbed, so it just runs off
Same thing is happening here in Australia, it's a bit of a worry as it means we could run out of water entirely by the time summer comes around.
247 years? HAH brits are so soft in my country we haven't had rain since the neolithic age goml pussies
In my country we don't even know what rain is, get on our level scrublords. Seriously though, I hate this weather. Being hot and sweaty all the time is so uncomfortable, if I ever move to a different country I'm sure as hell not going anywhere hotter.
I'm actually fearing the barbecue I'm going to next week as people are going to start melting at this point...literally.
Yeah no kidding, for the first time in my life I'm actually missing the crappy rainy weather over here.
You can have all the fucking rain I've been getting. It's rained on and off every day for the past two weeks.
Coldest Easter for 180 years and the Driest July for 247, what the fuck Britian?
Yeah no kidding, for the first time in my life I'm actually missing the crappy rainy weather over here.
Man I wish my area rained all the time, I love bad weather. Summer sucks so bad. I can't wait for winter, it is the best season.
I don't get why folk are complaining the weathers been great, the only problem is trying to get to sleep when it's roasting at night.
I can't remember what rain looks like
i think it shifted to texas, been a cloudy week
Coldest Easter for 180 years and the Driest July for 247, what the fuck Britian?
I hate to say this, but maybe climate change?? For once we aren't getting the shit end of the deal with it.
I hate to say this, but maybe climate change?? For once we aren't getting the shit end of the deal with it.
Apart from England flooding due to rising sea levels we're actually supposed to get the best end of the stick due to climate change, we're supposed to end up getting shit hot weather all the time.
Quickly, burn all our fossil fuels. Cheaper than holiday t' Benidorm
The heat is killing me, it is drier than Ghandi's flip flops here in the west midlands.
day 15 roads are melting train tracks are expanding i have resorted to making my own ghetto aircon with a water ump and some copper tubing and a fan will post pics on Facepunch when complete will save all Brits
So when's this heatwave supposed to fuck off? I'm getting a bit fucking tired of being hot all day every day.
I don't get why folk are complaining the weathers been great, the only problem is trying to get to sleep when it's roasting at night.
This kind of weather is nice a pinch, but to be constantly berated by it without rest is just unpleasant.
tea warehouses are lighting on fire, the regulars' muskets are even going off without anyones permission!
that stereotype is seriously outdated More like the chavs are mugging old ladies for bottles of water.
It's been fairly wet up here in Scotland. It was pouring with rain a few days ago.
It's been fairly wet up here in Scotland. It was pouring with rain a few days ago.
Not around Aberdeen. We had rainy showers in the morning a couple of days ago, but that was basically all the rain we've in weeks. We've had to water our vegetable beds and apple trees regularly, and that's unprecedented here. Literally as I posted that, it started to rain. Looks like a passing thundery shower.
Same thing is happening here in Australia, it's a bit of a worry as it means we could run out of water entirely by the time summer comes around.
You kidding, it was raining today and more showers are on the way
So when's this heatwave supposed to fuck off? When it's cold you can just wear warm clothes but one can't really escape the heat. An AC isn't really worth it for a few weeks a year.
