The Vermont senator was trailing Clinton in December
Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is now beating Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, according to a new poll, just over a week away from the Iowa Caucus.
The CNN/ORC poll shows the Vermont senator has 51% support, while Clinton has 43% support. The findings indicate a significant shift from a CNN/ORC December poll that found Clinton leading with 54% support and Sanders trailing with 36%.
Sanders has also overtaken Clinton in New Hampshire, according to a recent CNN/WMUR poll that showed the Senator ahead of the former Secretary in the state 60% to 33%. As he has gained ground in the race, Sanders has made clear that he sees his insurgent campaign as having a real chance at winning the White House. “People say, ‘what we’re hearing, Bernie, is that people like your ideas but they think you can’t win—you’re a nice guy, but you can’t beat the Republicans,’” Sanders told TIME. “That’s wrong.”
Damn right.
Looks like the election's finally getting real. It's gonna be a fun year.
its really sad that there is only one decent candidate. its no longer about picking who bests fits your ideals, its just picking the guy who isnt mental or controlled by big companies.

Man what would the U.S be like now if McCain and Palin won back in 08
Man what would the U.S be like now if McCain and Palin won back in 08
Honestly probably better than if Romney won in 2012

McCain was the last sensible Republican candidate in recent memory. I'd rather have him than any candidate on the Republican ticket since.
Guys this poll is semi flawed, it over emphasises men "53 to 47" when it was the exact opposite last election, plus iowa is a little messed up because his main support base is young people centered in college towns. We won't win until we win get way more of the older vote.

Actual Romney is much better than McCain. Unfortunately, the public only knows campaign Romney who had to try his damnedest to win over hardcore conservatives and, in the process, lost the growing moderate vote.
Iowa is only worth 6 electoral votes though. :/

Doesn't matter. It's a swing state, which means it is crucial for any candidate to win. Not only to deny it from the opposition, but also influence other swing states.
There is a reason swing states are also called battleground states.

Romney was OK but he swung far right after the primaries which pretty much gave Obama the opportunity to thrash him in debates and with policy

It's the first result in the electoral process, Sanders is tagged to won NH, if he wins in Iowa as well it will cripple Hillary's campaign, she says she will best him in Nevada and south Carolina but momentum is momentum
I never agreed with many of mcCains ideas, but I always had a certain amount of respect for him after this

but today, all the republicans on stage are completely nuts, and I wouldn't be surprised if the democratic party goes the same way in a decade or wo
I would vote for McCain any day of the week. Right now, Sanders has my vote. I want sanity and respect more than the vague political promises offered by other corporate sponsored candidates.

It's too bad a Republican nominee can't run for President without having to cater to the extreme conservative right.
Democrats don't really have the same problem. Extreme left politics aren't really common in the USA, so they can talk to moderates all day long

This is why Colin Powell turned down the option to race- he didn't want to change his political beliefs.
Colin Powell is another one of the few really cool republican candidates, by which I mean one who is respectful and calm in his debates and one who is pro-civil rights (and unlike hardcore republicans, doesn't commit the hypocrisy of wanting the govt to regulate this).

ya but the shit he and rumsfelt did to get the US in iraq would inevitably destroy any chance of a campaign. people say hillary is a criminal but powell went infront of congress and the UN with a vial of yellow sand and convinced them to go to war in iraq

eyup, but he's sense recanted much of that I believe. Regardless, when you weigh what he's done and how he's evolved against many other people in the field I believe he still comes out ahead.

Jon Huntsman was a really good Republican candidate in the 2012 election - one of the few I distinctly remember as being well spoken combined with rational arguments that were practically void of fallacies.
Republican candidates are faced with quite a conundrum, a catch-22 of sorts. They have to side with the reactionary conservative Christians to get past primaries, but then all the moderates are disgusted by them and don't vote for them in the general election
I never liked bernie as a public speaker. He looks disheveled, he grabs onto the podium really hard, he yells into the microphone, and he just kind of yells out one opinion after another. I think someone like Obama is a much better public speaker, but Obama is a lot younger and gives off a more organized appearance to me

Bernie is mental though. And with that reasoning you should love Trump, Bernie should too, Trump isn't backed by any SuperPacs. Or are you going to say Trump is "mental", abrasive yes, but not "mental".

If you don't think Trump is downright crazy, fucking mental, you haven't been keeping up with the news

I sincerely think it has to do with sensationalism. If you aren't crazy enough, you won't get screen time.
I hate to burst your bubble guys but another poll shows the exact opposite

Polls in Iowa should always be taken with a grain of salt. In 08 it switched between Obama and Clinton so much more often.

This doesn't matter at all in context of inner party politics.

Wanting to fix the core problem of american politics is "mental" now.
And wanting to start up 19th-century style tariff wars with other countries isn't.

This, exactly
Bernie looks tense, almost nervous. He clenches the podium and yells and never seems to relax or speak casually. It doesn't seem presidential, rather like a community organizer. I don't know if I can see him delivering a state of the union address.
yeah countries should be run by the best public speakers, not public servants.
