• Ideas for sv_downloadurl improvement

Hey all Thought I'd throw up a few ideas for the sv_downloadurl system. Large server hosts or people with really busy servers tend to chew allot of bandwidth, and its hard to find a decent host that won't screw you over or charge you through the ass for bandwidth. Which got me thinking... would it be possible to implement some kind of built in sv_downloadurl (specific to Garry's Mod) which supported multiple mirrors with differing options like load ballancing and bandwidth tracking. For example. - Client connects to server and asks what it needs - Server says it needs xyz - Client asks server for xyz - Server then looks at some kind of settings (be it configuration files or what ever) and then either does one of two things -- Gives the client a list of urls that the server uses (for redundancy so if one goes over its hosting allowocation and gets suspended, the client looks at the next one) -- Tells the client for each file which url to use, now this seems stupidly ineffecient, but the main idea is that the server KNOWS how big each file is, so therefor, its possible that the server can effectively load ballance the downloads to prevent one particular host. Another feature a load ballancing/multi sv_downloadurl solution would have, is that it would enable people to have a specific host or even a public host for each particular addon (e.g. PHX). Thus reducing the strain on the administrator. This is a bit of a brain dump and its prolly not possible, but still. its worth a thought at the potential this could do. And it is possible this idea is not unique either, if so I appologise. I'd Search but searching doesn't work atm and google is a bitch to interrogate. Have a nice day. Regards, Max
