Residents were being warned of health risks from contaminated floodwaters now pouring through homes, businesses and streets. The gale-force blast that caused havoc across the region yesterday had eased but heavy rain overnight caused widespread disruption and despair.
Christchurch was hit by that earthquake, right? That's a bit of bad luck :/
4 years ago, but its still looks like it was yesterday.
Holy shit this looks like the nicest town ever. ...I don't trust them. Burn it to the ground.
Hey Greg, is the party still on? Yeah, mate. I'll cruise over with my slab.
Every time someone says the word 'slab' I'm always reminded of that Courage the Cowardly Dog episode.
As someone from Colorado who also got hit by 100 year rains, you have my sympathy.
As someone from Colorado who also got hit by 100 year rains, you have my sympathy.
it's not too bad at least where I live (I'm about a ten minute walk from the heathcote river you see mentioned in some of those photo's captions) it's already high and dry. my boyfriend lives even closer and it's drying up there too. of course I can't talk about the people who live near the other major river that runs through christchurch but it seems at least most of the water has receded especially since the rain stopped. hell, most people still went to school and work, I just came back from a bank appointment at a bank a stones throw away from the river!
its not too bad in upper riccarton, just mud and ponds
its not too bad in upper riccarton, just mud and ponds
thank dog

God seems to hate Christchurch. Everything bad happens there. Ironic for the name of the city too!
On a side note, what kind of name is Christchurch? That's like living in "Jewtemple" or "Muslimmosque".
I'd say it's down to being twinned with the Christchurch in the UK, which is a small town where pretty much nothing happens. Apart from a bit of it got flooded. Maybe everything that happens to our Christchurch, happens to this Christchurch but worse?

The should have built their houses on stilts. Flooding would not be a problem if houses were on stilts
The should have built their houses on stilts. Flooding would not be a problem if houses were on stilts
What about the cars? I am pretty sure you cant build cars on stilts.
Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island..
But he is right, it's twinned with the UK town of Christchurch (although Christchurch in NZ is named after a college at Oxford University), which experienced flooding not too long ago.
What about the cars? I am pretty sure you cant build cars on stilts.
Not with that attitude you can't.
The should have built their houses on stilts. Flooding would not be a problem if houses were on stilts
you'd find that most of the houses near the riversides are elevated in respects to the river level. pretty sure any house made on stilts would have gotten fucked up in the several earthquakes we've had anyways.
But he is right, it's twinned with the UK town of Christchurch (although Christchurch in NZ is named after a college at Oxford University), which experienced flooding not too long ago.
are you sure? I've always thought christchurch (nz) was named after the christ church cathedral, which is/was the centre point of our city.
I initially panicked, because the town literally next to my hometown is called christchurch I live in the south of the UK
