Following a week of controversy surrounding language and its use against and in the transgender and drag communities, transgender icon Jayne County claims to have found herself banned from Facebook for using words that some activists have stated are transphobic.
Jayne County, hailed as one of rock n' roll's first gender variant icons and a fixture in the Andy Warhol factory scene, posted a Facebook status on Tuesday that contained the words "shemale" and "tranny."
Over the course of the past week, conversations surrounding the words "tranny" and "shemale" -- and if they should ever be used and if so, by whom -- have rocketed into the mainstream. This occurred after popular reality show "RuPaul's Drag Race" announced it would be removing a long-standing portion of their show that used the phrase "she-mail" when it came under fire from some transgender activists who claimed the word is derogatory. Several former "Drag Race" contestants who identify as trans also spoke out against the use of the words on the show.
We'll use gestures and various verbal noises.
Wow...so anti-LGBT rhetoric or name calling can get you banned from FB? If that's true then I've got a few thousand Christian pages to report.

no grunts though, could hurt someone who had their genitals removed
no grunts though, could hurt someone who had their genitals removed
...what? How was this hateful response necessary at all?
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
I got banned from FP one for calling a transgender in an article a transqueeer, I then discovered that it's a legit thing that people identify as. Who's transphobic now, Megafan?
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
They've always been offensive, it's de-humanising.
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
They've been slurs for a very long time now. Ignorance is just so widespread, intended or not, that a lot of people don't know they are. The accepted colloquial term is trans.
I remember seeing in my Tumblr feed once that someone screamed at someone else and completely dropped all ties in their friendship for innocuously using the word "trap", one time, for a (fictional!) guy that looked like a girl
Some people, man
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
yep. i would say porn hasn't done a whole lot to make people more aware of that
They even referred to it as the "t-word" I mean come on
nauuugh i wanted automerge
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
They're porn-related slurs, they're just as dehumanizing as calling someone a slut or whore
I say
Wow think of those born mute would ya, not everybody has the luxury and privilege to say things
yep. i would say porn hasn't done a whole lot to make people more aware of that
The issue is also that there are still many that are part of the lgbt community themselves who use those terms. In fact it's been all over the news lately, highlighting people within the lgbt community using these terms themselves. It seems a little over the top though to ban someone for using the word "tranny" or "shemale."

I honestly don't know what to call anyone anymore, I thought quiltbags were for grannies, not trannies.
Jayne County looks familiar, like one of those faces you hadn't seen since early childhood, I dunno

Also, that's not entirely correct either. There are in fact many cases of actual, true hermaphrodites. That image claims that there are none. (On the description for intersex) That's patently false.

Yeah I'm just going off what people in the LGBT community have told me, and everyone seems to have completely differentiating opinions on what is right/wrong to say.

Why do people treat this shit like it's difficult (also I've never heard the word 'quiltbag')
Just say 'trans' and if you're unsure about shit in a situation it's not hard to just ask for clarification
it really does not take that much effort to not be an offensive shithead to people

I don't know about you guys but the context and the names of the songs here here made me piss myself
“Will he now be forced to walk through the streets in shame? Why not the stocks? The whole episode disgusts me – as it should disgust anyone interested in a tolerant and diverse society. If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out. If we are about intimidating the free speech of others, we are no better than the anti-gay bullies who came before us.”
– Andrew Sullivan
Just, instead of using it or him/her as a neutral term, they is a pretty neutral word.

I take offense to that

When and where have you heard someone use that term? I've heard a lot of gender identities but not that one.
Censorship and restriction of freedom of speech at it's finest. Good job Facebook, you shmucks.
We should not restrict language, no matter the 'consequences,' it's a basis for freedom and free-thought.

too hard for modern day people who don't give a shit. depressing tbh.
Transgender activists seem to have separated themselves from most transgender people.

Which I suppose happens with a lot of "_____ activists," really. The activists get a bit too extreme, and it harms them and those they seek to represent.

whatever you say, nigga
So I can't say "Man, my car blew it's tranny at track-day this weekend. I ended up being the drag-queen, though" if I happen to be a lady with a car which has a broken transmission, but still manages to win the acceleration-focused racing?
