Oakland warehouse fire leaves 36 dead possibly more - Polidicks

OAKLAND, Calif. — One of the deadliest fires in recent U.S. history began amid a cluttered collective of artist studios known as the Ghost Ship and spread quickly through a two-story warehouse that did not have fire sprinklers, killing at least 36 people and possibly more. Firetrucks arrived within three minutes, officials said, but nothing could be done to stop the fast-spreading flames soon enough. I'm not surprised, when you have a rave party with loads of people, dark environment, and of course lack of firefighting measures, the rate is gonna be high. It could had been reduced or prevented had they just cleared firehazards and installed sprinklers

Sprinklers would have been effective but they are an immense cost and someone making an impromptu commune style warehouse studio living space without any permits or regards to codes isn't going to be concerned with safety.
