I propose a split (into two boards) of the General Games Discussion forum.

The first is how GGD currently seems to be used, which is large megathreads. It seems for the most part that any non-megathread gets drowned out quickly in GGD and it makes it discouraging to post stuff about games in general because they don't seem to stay afloat for more than a day. It doesn't seem a very "general" forum, so perhaps it could be named more along the lines of "Gaming Megathreads" or something like that.
The second is more akin to what we see in the Valve/Steam/PowerPlay forum where there are a lot of smaller threads about a more diverse set of topics: game ideas, stuff that's about more than a single specific game or series, that kind of thing. Right now there doesn't seem to be a place for that kind of stuff on here because it always gets drowned out by all the megathreads in GGD. This would inherit the "General Games Discussion" name because it would be more of a general discussion about games.
So I guess it's more of adding a new forum and moving the few smaller topics - and name - of GGD over to there, but I guess you could also call it a split.
No thats a good thing
Most of the non-megathreads are fucking atrocious posts
The games section is pretty much only megathreads because anything else would be related to a game that already has a megathread.
Think of each thread as a separate forum for that particular game.
Chat Thread-ifying GGD would probably be a poor idea in the long run. Valve/Steam/PowerPlay is a specific forum for a specific interest: Valve games and mods (not already covered by other sections such as the TF2 and SFM forums). GGD is a whole lot broader than just a specific creator/publisher.
There would probably be few posts relating to the new purpose of GGD if split, which would be industry discussion. GGD would be killed off if it was repurposed to just industry discussion (which MD could easily already cover).
If there was a chat thread forum it would turn in to genre threads, and since most genres have quintessential franchises that already have mega threads. Racing Game Chat would basically be Need for Speed Chat
I personally think that that might be a really good idea....
It would help keep the Megathreads to a single location, Help "organise" the forums a bit more.
Isn't that what Fast Threads is for?
If you don't want to post something minor on a thread loaded with megathreads... than just go to fast threads.
You may not like the idea proposed to fix that (hint it's how GD is right now)

Please, anything but that.
No, we don't need that.
How bout, Games Discussion, and Retro Games discussion? I know there's a thread for that, but the thread is dead, and there's so many different old titles to discuss.
There's a lot of forums we should totally get but this is not one of them

Now Retro Games discussion, I can get behind. It'd be a nice little community for all of FP's old console collectors, or if you just emulate the balls out of some old games.

If the thread is dead, how could you justify a whole section just for that?

It gets drowned out under most of the modern megathreads so most people that are fans of retro games don't see it.

Same as above. It's completely drowned because of all the other stuff. If you gave it its own subforum it would skyrocket, and it's better than giving it a single thread.

Like others have said, it usually gets drowned out by the more modern topics.
And more people are likely to see it.
Also anything in the Hobbies section other than Music, Durgs, and Film and Television rarely get posted in, so it wouldn't hurt.

I just bumped it, hopefully it'll get more life

what will qualify as retro
what will qualify as retro
Anything released from 1945-2001, I guess.
Also maybe retro rom hacks, emulators, or fan games.
what will qualify as retro
anything not this generation I guess? So anything before xbox360/ps3/wii.

I was thinking about anything before 2002, also including retro emulation discussion, rom hacking discussion, or fan game discussion based on retro games.

I include 6th gen with "retro" too. The gen before the previous gen.
retro is usually considered as stuff from before the PS2/gamecube/xbox

I was gonna do the /vr/ approach and make it 1945-1999, but I decided to be a tad more lenient and make it end around the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox era.
just make subforums of ggd like before
we can have a section for mmos, a section for retro games, and we can stuff games in progress back in there
We need a MMO subsection back.
i propose someone splits the OP's head in half with a bastard sword or katana
Part of the problem is if you post anything related to a single issue (even if it's otherwise a good thread), you get banned for Crap Thread. Now, if there actually was a megathread for that game it would make sense. But there isn't a megathread for (e.g.) N64 emulators, so if Mario 64 was freaking out you couldn't post it in GGD. Last I checked you couldn't post it in the Technical Support forum either (forum rules), though it's been a while since I was in there so I dunno.
So maybe we should create a "Games That Don't Have A Megathread Megathread".

That's why I wanted a retro board, so we could stuff in emulation/hacking megathreads.
