For the first time an operation has been conducted, at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, where electrodes have been permanently implanted in nerves and muscles of an amputee to directly control an arm prosthesis. The result allows natural control of an advanced robotic prosthesis, similarly to the motions of a natural limb. A surgical team led by Dr Rickard Brånemark, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, has carried out the first operation of its kind, where neuromuscular electrodes have been permanently implanted in an amputee. The operation was possible thanks to new advanced technology developed by Max Ortiz Catalan, supervised by Rickard Brånemark at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Bo Håkansson at Chalmers University of Technology. "The new technology is a major breakthrough that has many advantages over current technology, which provides very limited functionality to patients with missing limbs," says Rickard Brånemark. Big challenges There have been two major issues on the advancement of robotic prostheses: 1) how to firmly attach an artificial limb to the human body; 2) how to intuitively and efficiently control the prosthesis in order to be truly useful and regain lost functionality.
http://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-02-world-premiere-muscle-nerve-controlled-arm.html#jCp http://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/pressroom/chalmers/video/view/world-premiere-of-nerve-controlled-arm-prosthesis-10751
You have no idea how much I've asked for this. (User was banned for this post ("Meme reply" - Orkel))
Sit back and let the sci fi ooze into our world
You have no idea how much I've asked for this.
It's all coming together.
inb4: Deus Ex: Human Revolution IRL
Fucking yes.
Oh god... this plus google glass, where do I sign?
Now when are we going to get augmented organs so we can become near immortal.
Transhumanism is the future. These things get better everyday.
Can we make blatant Deus Ex references in transhumanism news articles a banme? I mean, Christ, it was funny the first few times, but now it's just annoying. That being said, this is awesome. Now we just need to make it affordable!
Transhumanism is the future. These things get better everyday.
Wow finally. No one on Facepunch has ever mentioned it. Everyone is a bunch of grimdark apocalyptics with no sense of exponential growth. That was a harsh generalization. I'm sorry.
Transhumanism is slowly coming. I dreamed of such a day, and now we got the first breakthrough. With this, we are on the rise, and soon more and more breakthroughs will come. I can only imagine what can come in the next few years. It is, amazing.
Too bad it probably won't be widely available within six months. Now seriously, tho. Next step we really need is feedback. As far as I know, we are very far from proper simulation of pressure, heat, and similar stimuli. Is there any publicly announced research going, on that?

now why would we want feedback of that sort on a prosthetic i mean having the ability to have touch would be all fine and dandy, but I'd rather have a completely numb synthetic arm then one that can feel pain how am i supposed to punch holes in walls if it hurts man!

I'm sorry.
Chances are the future is gonna be filled with this great tech, we'll start really suffering from global warming and TV will still be just as shit. So the world will probably continue being incredibly mediocre. That'd actually be really convenient. It'd only feedback if the arm was being damaged, but not simulating the strength of an actual human arm. That way I could punch walls to my hearts content, but if I punch something so hard that my fist may reach its area of plasticity, it'd beep and maybe supply some decent shocks to say "HEY DONT DO THAT YO"

I love how this got premiered shortly after the launch of Metal Gear Rising Revengance.
Oh god... this plus google glass, where do I sign?
Fuck google glass, get me some prosthetic eyes with google glass capabilities instead! Fuck yeah that would be awesome!
I think this is awesome for people missing limbs, but why would you replace your working arms with robot arms When will you ever need to punch through a wall?
When there's a wall in my way and a place I gotta get to.
It looks a bit creepy. They should have gone with a design that looks mechanical, rather than trying to make it look flesh like. Something more like this:
Yeah stuff like this looks way better
When I get an arm prosthesis I don't want it to look like a normal arm, I want it to look like I'm able to lift 200 kilos with it.
When I get an arm prosthesis I don't want it to look like a normal arm, I want it to look like I'm able to lift 200 kilos with it.
Something like this ? Yes yes deus ex, but that thing looks god damn sexy [t]http://sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/830241_467953353258018_1294584292_o.jpg[/t]
i dont know about you, but i would want a real looking arm if i ever got a replacement
That's the problem, the current one doesn't. It looks like a misshapen doll arm. Until they can make them look real enough to get out of the uncanny valley, I'll take the artificial looking prosthesis.
When I get an arm prosthesis I don't want it to look like a normal arm, I want it to look like I'm able to lift 200 kilos with it.
Unless you have the back muscles to actually lift it, you're pretty screwed. Alternatively, the lifting pressure you'll apply to the object might simply leave a finger/hand shaped hole in it.
