• Solar Storms: Rising Threat to Technology
The sun will be getting more active over the next few years and, reports CBS News Correspondent White Johnson, scientists are worried about the possible impact on all sorts of technology we take for granted, including satellites such storms could cripple. NASA says there have been five sun storms in the past century, and others could be on their way. No one is sure when the next one could hit, but researchers are hard at work trying to come up with better prediction mechanisms as they try to better protect that tech. The fiery explosions blistering the sun's surface have energy bursts with the strength of 1 billion hydrogen bombs. "Now we are going into the peak of the solar cycle," explains NASA's Lika Guhathakurta, "and, as we approach the peak, what happens is that the magnetic field on the sun gets twisted and really tense." Powerful electric charges can be sent rocketing toward earth. In 1989, just a minor flare knocked out electricity to millions of Canadians. "If you lose your Internet, if you lose your satellite connection, if you lose your electricity," Guhathakurta points out, "there is no Wall Sreet, there is nothing. It's almost throwing us back a hundred years."
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/06/11/earlyshow/main6571912.shtml comment on the site: I find this a bit scary :[
Cya Facepunch, I will miss you.
It's gonna be more than a hundred years, as back then people had stuff that didn't need electricity but still did the job. Now everything's been replaced by electrical products.
brb tinfoiling my room so my pc doesn't die.
We'll live.
I thought you had to have your electronics turned on for this to effect you.
I thought you had to have your electronics turned on for this to effect you.
Exactly that's why its bad. I still think it can fry your chips even though they are turned off
Is this bad if I'm sitting in an airplane when a flare hits the same area I'm flying trough?
2012 it is coming [editline]04:27PM[/editline]
Is this bad if I'm sitting in an airplane when a flare hits the same area I'm flying trough?
yes. and even if you survive the crash, no one can save you because there is no more technology to rescue you. You will be doomed. :)
Is this bad if I'm sitting in an airplane when a flare hits the same area I'm flying trough?
good question.. :/ would it matter though? if the airplane failed and just randomly started plummeting, it could crash into anything.. :ohdear: [editline]03:28PM[/editline]
2012 it is coming [editline]04:27PM[/editline] yes. and even if you survive the crash, no one can save you because there is no more technology to rescue you. I'm going to need a trained owl and learn how to fight and use weaponry.
I hope this happens.
natural selection will really kick in :c
I better grow a huge penis and get balls of steel so women will choose me as the genetic material for their offspring during the primitive cave age of the future.
If a solar flare fries all equipment on the time of the hit... Oh my god!
Can this pass a Faraday cage?
Sun is having it's periods, throw chocolate at it and see if it calms down
Is this gonna happen within my life time? God damn no technology will make most modern day people go insane, securtiy camaras will be dead all crime monitoring equitment will die and murderers/rapists will be off the fucking hook. There will be riots all over the fucking place.
All those poor poor people in I.T. jobs that just make word documents all day long. They will loose their jobs, loads of people will loose jobs. Ah well... sucks to be them i s'pose.
Well... it's not like we can't repair things. Power stations get repaired quickly because so important, and besides do you think there will be a huge EMP that will obliterate most electric stuff? No. Some of the new phones, satellites and computers may get some trouble but it won't kill anyone.
you people honestly think there wont be a material made to protect electronics?
I think material like that already exists... i doubt it will have much of an effect against the sun though =/
Oh shit man. We just did an experiment on the effect of solar storms and solar flares.
Can this pass a Faraday cage?
The charge carriers in the cage must be affected by an electromagnetic field to reorganize to counter it. There'll be a pretty strong initial spike even inside the cage, but I don't think it's enough to severely damage most equipment.
Another scatterbrained techno-fear. Like spine flue and supervolcanoes. Viva La Victoria!
Even if it does destroy most stuff, we do not need to re-invent them. But a day without technology will cause chaos. Planes will fall, boats will get lost and all that crap. Also people in hospitals will die...
Viva La Victorian Ages! Bring back steam power!

The future looks like this: ALL OVER AGAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!
