There's something quite haunting about this video, the fact that it's in colour and you actually see planes go down just adds to it. Especially seeing as a lot of the Japanese planes don't even take evasive maneuvers. Seeing one pilot eject and then the plane strafe him right afterwards is chilling, what a hopeless situation to be in.
A little bit of digging reveals that it's an American pilot, there's not a lot else I can find.
Such was the war.
The Japanese planes might aswell have been paper mache, seeing as they blew(or fell) to pieces.
The Japanese didn't have many good things to fight a war with.
Pretty awesome.
Point of interest:
1:09 Japanese plane is hit, pilot bails but deploys chute too early, chute is ripped off and he plummets to his death.
that guy sure did destroy a lot of shit.

The Zero was an excellent airplane, its main weakness was the paper armor but it had great maneuverability.
I felt bad until I realised how evil their army was at the time
The oddly calm music made watching this footage... Weird.
The below poster found the perfect word. It's surreal.
Very surreal with the music.
breaking news
people died in world war 2

Indeed it was. The reason the plan handled so well was because it was as light as a feather. Especially towards the end of the war when they began running out of materials.
Also, holy shit @4:50. When the pilot was strafing those people on the beach.

Yeah. I guess, since he was heading out to the sea, he could have been returning from an inland mission or something, and decided to use up his last ammo on some "fun"? Or they were told to spread some terror among the civilians. We may never know.
Awesome footage, really gives you a feel as to how these pilots operated.
WW2 is always an interesting war to study
Damn. Makes me wish there was another way to wage war that wouldn't actually put people in a killed or be killed position. Alas, it won't happen.

Yeah. Poor civilians. But it seems they both survived, they can be seen running away.

That fucking sucks man.

The Japanese didn't have many good things to fight a war with.
Really, any airplane that sustains a number of high caliber rounds is not really going to be in that great a shape for flying. The very principle of flight requires the object to be aerodynamic and smooth, and surface covered in gaping holes and possibly flaming refuse is not going to fly for very long. 30-06 or .50 rounds will turn any plane into swiss cheese.
Sure, a plane with a metal frame may not break apart quite so easily, but it will still plummet when given a few good shots.
The Zero fighters are actually quite reputable.. If given a more powerful engine later in the war, it probably would have bee quite formidable, even against the newer allied fighter models.
Though what you said last applies to just about everything else the Japanese made. Their tanks and firearms were awful, especially by the later part of the war. You could penetrate their tank armor with rifle caliber cartridges.
i'd like to fly so badly, plane or otherwise
probably my biggest dream is to fly

That's horrific. I never noticed that the first time I watched it.

Mine too brother :D
At some parts it looks like they are going to fly right into the ground, but then they pull up at the last second.
Yeah. Poor civilians. But it seems they both survived, they can be seen running away.
Yeah. It seems that they were just fishermen if the boat near them has any merit. Glad they made it.

Well that makes sense, especially with the late war stuff. Japan had lost almost everything by mid to lat 1944 with 1945 being completely hopeless. Everything they deployed got destroyed. So they were really low on materials. In the end everything was just cheap shit because they couldn't afford to make quality items (in terms of resources and time).
Pulped I don't think the pilot hit the parachuter.
@5:10, is he shooting some random fisherman in a boat?
@5:10, is he shooting some random fisherman in a boat?
Could be anything. Doubt its just a random fisherman.
Just so you guys know this was probably in black and white, then they colored it in later.

Damn you and your zero in IL2.
