• Fiat Chrysler probe after Anton Yelchin death
Carmaker Fiat Chrysler says it will investigate after Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his car - a model that had been recalled - at his home in Los Angeles. The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards down the steep drive after he got out, pinning him against a fence. In April, Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.1m vehicles worldwide over the risk they could roll away after drivers exit. The issue had been linked to 41 injuries, it said. this isn't a surprise, chrysler makes dangerous and extremely low-quality vehicles
Grand Cherokees have always been rolling coffins. There's the fuel tank rupture issue as well.
this isn't a surprise, chrysler makes dangerous and extremely low-quality vehicles
The sheer amount of them when you live in a city who's major form of employment is a Chrysler factor is terrifying.
Wait, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Am I gonna die?
How do you know you're not dead already? Have you checked?
Grand Cherokees have always been rolling coffins. There's the fuel tank rupture issue as well.
thanks for reminding me i need to get my 2000 grand cherokee's parking brake fixed
How do you know you're not dead already? Have you checked?
No, not recently. Golly, I better call my doctor.
Wow an electronic gear shifter where its position has no indication of what gear you are in. Brilliantly unnecessary idea. Being a Chrysler product it just sounds like another electronic that can break someday and leave you not able to put your car in park.
this isn't a surprise, chrysler makes dangerous and extremely low-quality vehicles
This is just a meme, by the way. They've had reliability issues they're just coming back from, but the lx platform and most of their jeeps are fairly reliable as long as you dont get anything with a 4cyl. The older 200s were fairly garbage, as well as the smaller motors in the darts, but other wise, buying a ram or anything with their V6s and V8s after like 06 won't bite you in the ass. People have had issues figuring out these shifters for a while, I think that whatever alphabet soup agency that did the last investigation concluded it wasn't mechanical issues causing this, but people not getting how to use it. Which is sort of understandable, the first time I saw one it was weird, but I'm nore or less used to them now.

(I have no experience with automatics though) I know some of BMWs cars are, Mercedes and Tesla's systems are also like that. The issue with this isn't the shifter design but the fact it wouldn't tell the driver that it wasn't in park.
Wait, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Am I gonna die?
any minute now...
Wait, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Am I gonna die?
You're either doomed to die, or doomed to make a lot of fixes.
Wait, I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Am I gonna die?
If i were you I would start using the handbrake more often.
Glad to see that, at the very least, they're investigating it.
A video on the issue from last month from Consumer Reports:

Sure their high end cars are sometimes solid but they should be for the price.
What a horrible and unnecessary death. Sometimes I'm worried I'll die after slipping on a bath tile or something. My own car rolling and crushing me into a fence is about as tragic.
Do high end cars no longer have Handbrakes? That'd surprise me..
Do high end cars no longer have Handbrakes? That'd surprise me..
I'll never own a car with electrically actuated parking brake. Fuck that, gimme mechanical linkage to a physical lever. But I'm also a advocate for stickshift in anything but large trucks or traffic jam city cars. I like being in charge instead of relying on the decision of a box which is programmed to act like it always knows better than me.

Grand Cherokees still have a mechanical parking brake as far as I know, it's a foot pedal on the floor on ours I can see the new shifter being confusing at first since it snaps back to the center, but you get used to it pretty quickly. I'm fairly sure it even sets an alarm off if you forget to put it in park, or put the brake on
A bit problematic for self driving cars though.
Good thing Chrysler is about 500 years away from producing a self-driving car. I'll take the mechanical shifter & brake lever, please.
