I guess thats a benefit of living in a small town where everybody is bound to know eachother. walking by someone in the streets of my town 9 chances out of 10 result in conversation.

A walk to the store from my place I run into 2 or 3 people. Lot of the time they're on their way to the same place so we walk and talk. It's not as annoying as you seem to think it would be. I would definitely rather it like this than everyone just walks with their heads down with robot expressions not giving a fuck about the other people around you.

that's a bit of a generalization, i still find friends walking around in a big city and there's plenty of people who don't mind starting conversations with strangers, even more than in small towns, i'd say
