Weren't British railroads nationalized before the 90s anyways? It seems they'll just go back and forth between nationalizing and privatizing.

And seeing as privatisation has been such a failure, I see no reason for not nationalising all the railways.

The tendancies to private companies is to go only where they feel there will be money, not where it is actually needed. Which is why the suburban rail in London is so messed up, because when they built it there was no planning for a greater system because they were competing with other companies. It's why for example the surburban rail line near where I live travels right next to the End of the northern line (we're talking metres here). If the rail company hadn't rushed to build it there first, then the northern line would have come to where I live, something that would be massively useful.
