National Express will hand the running of the East Coast Main Line to the government at one minute to midnight on Friday 13 November.
The government said in July that it would take over the route, which runs trains between London and Edinburgh.
Ministers had refused National Express's requests for its contract with the government to be renegotiated.
QUICK RAILWORKS MAKE A NEW DLC TRAIN QUICK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
This will go well...
1 minuite to midnight on FRIDAY THE THIRTEEEEEEEEENNNTHH, maybe the trains'll be on time this winter for once.
Shit. Amtrak sucks, so I feel sorry for you guys in GB.
Good. The privatisation of the railways has been a fucking disaster.

If the nationalized tracks in the UK ran as poorly as Amtrak, the country would have imploded.
Weren't British railroads nationalized before the 90s anyways?
It seems they'll just go back and forth between nationalizing and privatizing.

All public transport (except trains) in London is publicly owned and run, seems to work fine.

The railways were natonalised in 1948, so that's about a 50 year gap between them being nationalised and privatised (this is only one part of the railways, owned by a failing franchise). And seeing as privatisation has been such a failure, I see no reason for not nationalising all the railways.

THAT'S SOCIALISM!
You know who else nationalized the railroads? Hitler.

You know who else nationalized the railroads? Mussolini.

Personally I feel that public transport should only be publicly owned. The tendancies to private companies is to go only where they feel there will be money, not where it is actually needed. Which is why the suburban rail in London is so messed up, because when they built it there was no planning for a greater system because they were competing with other companies. It's why for example the surburban rail line near where I live travels right next to the End of the northern line (we're talking metres here). If the rail company hadn't rushed to build it there first, then the northern line would have come to where I live, something that would be massively useful.

I know and I agree, I was just making fun of the people who cry "SOCIALISM!" and "government" when things like this are brought up.

Look at when all the busses and trains were nationalised and tell me what we have today is better, I hate having to pay £2.50 just to go 2 miles down the road.

I know you were dear, I was merely explaining my view :)
I'm going up to Harrogate by National Express East Coast in December. Well East Coast should I say now.
