World champion cyclist Lance Armstrong banned from world Ironman events over doping probe
(CNN) -- Champion cyclist Lance Armstrong won't be allowed to compete in international Ironman triathlon contests while he's under investigation for doping, the World Triathlon Corporation announced Thursday. The ruling bars him from the Ironman France competition scheduled for June 24 in Nice, the agency said.
The decision comes after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, or USADA, confirmed Wednesday that it is opening proceedings against Armstrong and five former teammates. Armstrong said Wednesday the agency intends to "dredge up discredited" doping allegations against him in a bid to strip him of his seven Tour de France victories. The champion cyclist has always insisted he never took performance-enhancing drugs.
Armstrong was accused of using such drugs by other riders, but never failed a drug test. But with the new investigation open, the World Triathlon Corporation suspended him.
Justice Department prosecutors in February said they closed a criminal investigation after reviewing allegations against Armstrong. They had called witnesses to a federal grand jury in Los Angeles, but they apparently determined they lacked evidence to bring a charge that Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs."These are the very same charges and the same witnesses that the Justice Department chose not to pursue after a two-year investigation," Armstrong said Wednesday.
"USADA only initiates matters supported by the evidence," Tygart said. "We do not choose whether or not we do our job based on outside pressures, intimidation or for any reason other than the evidence." All named individuals are presumed innocent until proven otherwise, he added.
According to its website, the quasi-government agency is recognized as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American and Paralympic events in the United States.
Armstrong said the organization has "self-written rules" and punishes first and adjudicates the facts later.
And before anyone says it. Doping generally has nothing to do with "Dope", marijuana or heroin. Doping is taking performance enhancing drugs like steroids to help improve an athelete.

All I can see from this is basically,
"Stop Winning."

Doping in cycling is usually injecting yourself with blood more than it is steroids, especially nowadays, in any case.
That's dumb, all the other riders complaining that they didn't get the gold medal, this isn't Little League. Should we just give everyone a first place medal?

How does that work?
How about amphetamines?
Blood doping is the practice of boosting the number of red blood cells (RBCs) in the bloodstream in order to enhance athletic performance. Because such blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles, a higher concentration in the blood can improve an athlete’s aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and endurance.
Take blood out, process it to increase red blood cell count, freeze it then reinject it before the competition. It doesnt necessarily need to be processed, I'm pretty sure Lance Armstrong uses a hyperbaric chamber to raise his RBC, I dont think thats cheating in itself though unless you were to draw the blood after being in the chamber then have it put back in right before a competiton.
The higher count of red blood cells means you can transfer more oxygen and stuff to your muscles, giving you more stamina/endurance.

That is just a general term, right? I'm under the assumption that freezing blood would cause the cells to burst from the expansion of water. More like cooled.

Yeah, I just meant to store, not literally freeze it solid.
To be honest it is kinda our fault that people do this shit. We expect them perform way above their physical limits so they have to resort to stuff like this to assist him.
Though I honestly believe using doping or other performance drugs do not make someone in to a unstoppable athlete. They had the talent there before, all they're doing is helping themselves push their bodies even more. You don't just get good by using drugs or doping.
Would they be investigating this if he was losing all the time? Hell no, they wouldn't have a care in the world if he was doping. Its simply because he wins a lot and is now a house hold brand.

We don't really expect them to perform way above their limits? They are doing a sport that people watch for fun. There aren't people out there saying, "Well if he can't ride 400 miles in 20 minutes I'm not watching this shit" If the athletes took longer to finish a race that wouldn't be a problem. If they had to ride slower that wouldn't be a problem.
It isn't the people who are expecting them to perform past their limits, it is the athletes themselves. There is always someone better than you so you have to train harder and work harder to compensate and do better. They push themselves, no one forces them to do anything.
Also, performance enhancing drugs in a sport like cycling is definitely giving them an advantage. The main point of cycling is to show off your strength and endurance and performance enhancing drugs increase just that. Now if you argued that performance enhancing drugs didn't help ping pong players, that would be more believable. But in a sport that has a main focus of strength and power and endurance it is hard to make that point.
Am I the only one that doesn't care if Lance is doping or not? I honestly can't fathom society's obsession with whether or not he did some funny business ten years ago.

Nobody likes grammar nazis.
If it's a competition, no one should ever be surprised people are pushing themselves in new ways and finding new ways to be great and to win. That's just what people always have done and always will do.
If he hasn't been caught on drug tests then I don't see how this is an issue and why he got banned.
Hell, personally, I'd like to see the steroid olympics. Just let the nutbars that want to go nuts and push themselves to inhumane planes do it and lets see what can really be done. I know it's entirely unethical to a large degree of people, but that's what competition is about in a lot of ways to a lot of people.
