SINGAPORE: The teenage Taoist medium who organised a suicide pact had been upset over his parents' divorce.
The coroner's court heard this as the brother and friends of 16-year-old medium Ku Witaya took the stand in court on Tuesday.
Witaya had convinced seven other teenagers to take part in the suicide pact last year.
Witaya and Sia Chan Hong fell nine storeys to their death, while the others backed out at the last minute.
The tragedy happened at Block 667, Jalan Damai in Kaki Bukit in the wee hours of August 23 last year.
Witaya had told them the world is coming to an end and they would be resurrected as slayers of demons.
On Tuesday, Witaya's friends testified that he seemed troubled and stressed over his parents' divorce and financial problems. One said Witaya had previously mentioned that death will solve all his problems.
A diary entry by one of the witnesses was also read in court. The entry said he was now going to be a slayer and that he cannot be a doctor or a lawyer when he grows up.
Those who were in the suicide pact said they only followed Witaya because he was a close friend and not because he was a medium or because they thought he had special powers.
Separately, Singapore's Taoist Federation confirmed that the HDB flat where Witaya lived was being used illegally as a temple. The federation also revealed that more than 1,000 housing flats are being misused as Taoist temples.
The Housing and Development Board (HDB) said it had issued warning letters to 12 such flats in 2007 to 2008. But only one HDB household has been warned so far this year.
The Taoist Federation said most of these makeshift temples have histories dating back to Singapore's kampung days. The owners said they do not have enough money to build proper temples, so they resort to using their homes.
The federation said it will send out warning notices soon.
Eight Singapore fans of Japanese game Slayers entered into a suicide pact so that they could become "Slayers" themselves and kill demons in World War III. The "pact" lasted two suicides, before the rest of the kids realized they were being f*cking stupid and backed out of the plan once they saw two friends leap to their deaths from a tall building.
The pact was started by a 16-year-old, self-proclaimed Taoist medium called Ku Witaya, who convinced his brother and six other kids to join him in his quest to become a "Slayer." He had led them to believe the world was coming to an end and that they had to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. The power he had over them was seemingly broken when he and his friend Sia Chan Hong were the first to make this "sacrifice," jumping from a ninth floor window. Hong survived the fall, but died in hospital three hours later.
Slayers is quite an old set of games, based on a series of light novels that revolve around a demon called the Lord of Nightmares that will be reborn if the world is destroyed. Singapore is not exactly known for its liberal and understanding approach to videogames, so we'll see if the game connection has any repurcussions.
Seriously though, these are the stupidest kids I've ever heard about.
[Update: Somebody from Singapore contacted us and said that the suicide was not about games and that if we did not remove this article, he would "contact the relevant government agencies." Seriously, he threatened us with government intervention. Hit the jump for his email.]
I facepalm myself when I read it on the newspaper. The leader was 16! How dumb can they get? Well, only 2 people were dumb enough to jump.

Oh, lawdy.
"Hey, Steve is starting a suicide pact based on an old SNES game!"
"Yeah, that Steve. He's a pretty cool guy. Let's do it too! We'll be popular kids as well!"

Alas, another answer to the question "If your friend told you to jump off a cliff, would you?"

He convinced the rest to get on the roof and watch.
Fighting demons in WW3 does sound fun but I like being alive.
Good lol, I don't want people like that in our species
Newsflash: Long falls are bad for you
I'm trying to think of a good Persona 3 joke, but it isn't coming.

Falling never hurt anyone. Rapid deceleration and hitting the ground at speed does.
Falling never hurt anyone. Rapid deceleration and hitting the ground at speed does.
Know your physics.
Well at least we've got 2 slayers to kill dem demons!
Natural selection.

I plan to become a shinigami after i die
This is just like when people thought dying in dreams could kill you.
How do they think they've figured these things out? "Oh yeah, I talked to a guy who died in his sleep from dreaming he died."
I thought this was going to be about emulators :downs:
You guys laugh at them while in reality they could just be in invisible noclip mode and teabagging your face at this very moment
Slayer is Singapore slang for an hero.
