Hello, this is my first post on facepunch. Im not sure if this is the right section for this, if it isn't admin please move and and don't flame me ^__^
Alright, I created this gun and bullet for a half life 2 mod, what do you guys think?
The gun is 1024 x 1024 and the bullet is 512

*** Edit I have added a shotgun a made some time ago along with it's shell, the shotgun is 2048x and the shell is 512x I did not want to make a new thread so I am just going to add it here. Hope you guys like it!

I think the frame of the gun is too thin, otherwise it looks good.
Gun itself looks really good, there is a seam at the bullet's texture but you can fix that easily.
Also consider posting your 3d stuff here: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1062648-Digital-3D-Art-V7

also welcome to fp
It looks very thin (although that may just be the gun) but it's nice. I like it.

Also, avoid using emotes like this, they don't go down well in these parts. If you wanna use emotes, use the proper FP ones: http://www.facepunch.com/misc.php
Only problem is the barrel. The inner diameter of the barrel should be the same as the inner diameter of each bullet chamber.
That's a really damn thin gun
It's hard to really see any detail because of the mile off turnaround. You don't need to spin the damn thing just show me some big close-ups.
That being said the textures are huge and could easily be halved.
Very nice, any mod in particular?
The bullet could probably be halved. But I would say the gun is fine being that it is for a first person.

Ok then but I still can't see anything because it's so tiny.

What's wrong with big textures? You can always scale down, but you can't scale up.

Textures cost quite a bit and in this case it doesn't seem to conform to any standard of pixels per unit. Especially when the gun is 1024 and a tiny bullet is 512.
All nonretarded engines do mipmaps these days
and lods, but I think thats user created
The cartridge doesn't look like a real cartridge, the cup at the end is way too lengthy.
Here's a .38 Special for reference:

And? It costs more to have a larger texture even with mipmaps.
The gun is too thin, and you should round off the edges on the grip more, but otherwise it looks really good.

If you can't handle a 512x512 or a 1024x1024 than you probably need to upgrade.

And if you can optimize but you don't, your lazy and silly.

No offence, Nvidia.

it becomes an issue when nothing is optimized and you have a hundred of those taking up all the vram.

Good job not understanding why optimization is essential to practice. Games can handle 2048 textures but that doesn't mean they should. Even if it isn't going to be in a game there still is the idea that you should stick to standards like uniform texel density across objects.

The fuck do you need such a hires texture for a fucking bullet.

Reminds me of all those HIGH RES HD bullet shells for counter strike on gamebanana
I'm gonna put 4096 textures on a pencil with 12 tris
I believe now a days in 2011, the texture size minimum for anything should be 512. anything less would look cartoonish and would not fit the style of what the game is trying to go for. But I may be wrong, I have only bee doing this for 7 months.
Nah it depends on the unit size of the game you're working on. I wouldn't expect more than a 128x128 for a bullet. Ask one of the devs on your project what the pixels per unit is and if they don't know tell them to find out.
I talked to one guy on my dev team and this is what he had to say
yeah pixel per unit = texel space vs screen space
actually its a bit different but they both work together
pixel per unit is usually for environmental stuff that the player can get close to or farther away from
texel space for things that are always the same distance away like, if that shell was ejected from an animation its all about the size of it on screen: 256 is plenty
128 would be pushing it but probably would work. but like i said id fit it into the weapon texture and give it about 256 pixels of space

Go for that. Saves a texture call and a lot of engines pause between calls.
No comments on the Shotgun / Shotgun Shell?
Disappointing :(
