KEMEROVO, Russia – Scientists from several countries, including Russia and the U.S., will gather in the Kemerova region of Siberia to hunt down the Yeti, after alleged sightings of the legendary creatures increased threefold in the area over the past 20 years. Scientists from Russia, the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Estonia, Mongolia and China were invited to evaluate evidence of the creatures -- the existence of which has never been proven -- at a conference later this week, according to Russian radio station the Voice of Russia. Alleged sightings of Yetis in Kemerovo and the neighboring Altai region, about 1,988 miles (3,200 kilometers) east of Moscow, are up three times compared to 20 years ago, with scientists estimating that there is a current population of at least several dozen in the area. Other evidence of the existence of the creatures -- such as basic twig huts, twisted branches and footprints of up to 35 centimeters (14 inches) -- also has been found in the area. A group of scientists from the conference will be sent out to search the region's mountains to examine the evidence and try spot a Yeti. It will be the first expedition of its kind since 1958, when scientists from the Soviet Academy of Sciences scoured Western Siberia trying to catch a Yeti. Igor Burtsev, who heads the Moscow-based International Center of Hominology, said, "When Homo sapiens started populating the world, it viciously exterminated its closest relative in the hominid family, Homo neanderthalensis. Some of the Neanderthals, however, may have survived to this day in some mountainous wooded habitats that are more or less off limits to their arch foes."
Source http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/10/04/russian-and-us-scientists-gather-to-hunt-down-yeti/ This is pretty funny if you ask me.
This sounds like the plot of a bad direct-to-DVD movie In which case, no one will come back alive
This sounds like the plot of a bad direct-to-DVD movie In which case, no one will come back alive
This is Vladimir Putin we're talking about, the only one who won't come out alive is the Yeti.
Cool except neither Obama nor Putin is involved
Title changed because it was misleading. Stop with that.
Run Yeti run! They're closing in on you!
I doubt they'll find anything; the sasquatch is but a legend. Even if they do find something, I doubt it'll be the fabled great-ape cryptid.
Considering we're still discovering new species I see no viable reason why the Yeti doesn't exist
This is Vladimir Putin we're talking about, the only one who won't come out alive is the Yeti.
I dunno, a big primate that lives alone, the last of its kind, in the Siberian mountains is pretty boss.
I think I saw this on the Sci-Fi channel once.
After seeing the Bigfoot in RDR, and that speech between it and Marston, every time I hear about Yetis or Bigfoots it makes me imagine a similar scenario. Which is kinda awesome. A sentient talking Yeti will greet the explorers.

would be cool if they existed
Dammit. Do something a bit easier like find the Sasquatch.
Surely if they did exist they'd have already been found by now?
Surely if they did exist they'd have already been found by now?
Not exactly, there are vast close to unexplored regions of land in Northern Canada, Siberia, some parts of Africa etc, where these cryptids could perfectly exist without ever being detected unless a lot of effort is put into it or you just accidentally happen to "bump" into one.
Something must seriously exist for them to devote this much funding to it.
Something must seriously exist for them to devote this much funding to it.
Wow there are so many jokes I could make here I'm actually overwhelmed Excuse me for a bit

I wouldn't bother watching it.
Still haven't seen that movie.
It's pretty meh. Gaston is the only reason to watch it. No one acts as silly as Gaston.
Why the hell wasn't I invited along for this? I told those assholes to fuckin' wait, they said they would and now I will never get to make love to my cave woman dream girl.

[img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img][img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img][img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img]
