My argument is that people who wish they were BADASS or try to be BADASS don't understand the meaning of the term.
To avoid seeming pretentious, I will start off by saying that I do not consider myself to be a Badass. Far from it, in fact.
Second, I will break down the litteral meaning of the term, and hopefully illuminate the minds of some wannabe "badasses".

The 2 key words in Badass are BAD and ASS. BAD means exactly what you think it means - the opposite of good. Synonyms would be evil, malevolent, atrocious, etc. ASS also means exactly what you think it means - to behave in such a way so as to make an "ass" of yourself.
Put it together and what do you get? BADASS - someone who is both bad and an ass. A true BADASS must also, as a side note, be relatively successful in carrying out his goal(s), in order to keep him from drifting into the category of just being a PIECE OF SHIT. A Badass also must be individualistic - he does what he does because he personally believes in it, not because he was ordered nor because it's the popular thing to do. Finally, to satisfy the Badass requirement, he must have proven himself in something involving physical force (fighting, contact sports, high-intensity physical activity)
Badass is commonly improperly referred to as meaning the same thing as "tough" or "brave" or "daring" but, as we clearly see, it is not exactly a synonymous notion. A true Badass will, as a consequence of being what he is, indeed be tough, brave, and daring. However, being tough, brave, and daring does not make you a Badass.
Now, I will reveal something about people:
It is VERY easy to make an Ass of yourself. Being BAD, however, is a challenge - it takes real guts and a stiff chest that is willing to suffer loss of respect, friendship, material things, status/titles, and even his own health/life as a result of his actions. Some people, even if they try, really aren't capable of it. Badass is as Badass does - a lot of guys like to ACT or APPEAR to be Badass (and some are very good at it), but it's all about what you actually DO in the end that determines you as a Badass, or as just a trash-talking Ass.
Lets look at some real-life examples and put them through the true BADASS TEST - I've heard all of the following people referred to as "Badasses"

[i]BAD?[/i] American football player who got a clever and smooth-talking lawyer to convince a jury to exonerate him from the murders he committed, later imprisoned for kidnapping and armed robbery
[i]ASS?[/i] Became a real celebrity by creating a huge stink in the press, media, and courts several times
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Bona-fide BADASS
[b]Malcolm Young[/b]
[i]BAD?[/I] Played guitar and did backup vocals for AC/DC - a very successful gig... but if he ever actually did anything bad, no one in the public circle ever found out about it.
[i]ASS?[/I] AC/DC's style is pretentious by nature, but that's just rock.
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Not really BADASS
[b]Dick Marcinko[/b]
[i]BAD?[/I] Navy SEAL and bestselling author... infamous for breaking rules and using physical coercion to get people to supply him with what he needed, criminally charged with defrauding the government at one point
[i]ASS?[/I] Read his books - he really is a DICK by nature and an alcoholic show-off
[i]END RESULT?[/I] A "tragic-hero" BADASS (I love the guy nonetheless)

[i]BAD?[/I] He's the president of America... no criminal charges... polite and charismatic speech... some would say some of his decisions have been "bad" though
[i]ASS?[/I] No, because he's such a smooth-talker (aside from the threat he made to the Jonas Brothers), he's never really impolite, bitter, or sarcastic
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Not Badass at all
[b]Spyro the Dragon[/b]
[i]BAD?[/I] Aside from his temporary conversion to "Dark Spyro" (which he used for the extra power it gave him in order to defeat Gaul), Spyro really has no spite whatsoever and seems willing to generously help anyone, anytime, anywhere (kinda a toolbag)
[i]ASS?[/I] In the earlier games (in which he was younger), he could be a bit cheeky at times, but he kept it on a rated-G level
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Being tough, brave, and daring does not make you a Badass.
[B]Muhammad Ali[/B]
[i]BAD?[/I] Retired American boxer (it's a legal sport) and a 3-time World Heavyweight Champion, considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, had an affair and a few divorces (but, in America, who doesn't?)
[i]ASS?[/I] If you know anything about him, you'll know he was a real trash-talker, particularly within earshot of the public media
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Bad, no. Ass, absolutely.
[B]Adolf Hitler[/B]
[i]BAD?[/I] Unless you're a Nazi yourself... then this is a no-brainer; WWI vet who later went to Germany and founded a Jew-Killing empire that got startlingly far down the road in establishing itself as a long-term NWO
[i]ASS?[/I] Known in social circles for having a very bad temper; gave long-winded publicly-broadcast speeches ranting against anyone not Aryan
[i]END RESULT?[/I] One of the biggest Badasses in all history

[i]BAD?[/I] 37th president of the US, notorious for being the first to voluntarily resign from office due to accusations of having been involved in an attempted robbery at Watergate
[i]ASS?[/I] He managed a lot of different things including Vietnam, the Soviet Union, and the American economy, and wasn't a particular ass... unless you count how he withheld the recordings of his cabinet meetings and fired Cox when he wouldn't vouch for written meeting summaries to be released
[i]END RESULT?[/I] Doesn't satisfy enough requirements of a Badass - more like a bigot (a.k.a. PIECE OF SHIT)
After reading this, do you REALLY consider yourself Badass? Do you really WANT to be a Badass?
