• UK MPs to hold debate on leaving the EU

Backbench MPs have agreed to hold a debate and vote on calls for a referendum to be held on whether the UK stays in the European Union. Tory MP David Nuttall's motion says the public should have three options put to them in the nationwide vote - keeping the status quo, leaving the EU or reforming the terms of the UK's membership of the European Union. The government would not be bound by the result of the vote but it could prove politically tricky for David Cameron. He has refused calls for an in/out referendum but it has been a popular idea among Tory backbenchers. The motion proposed says: "This House calls upon the Government to introduce a bill in the next session of Parliament to provide for the holding of a national referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union, leave the European Union, or renegotiate the terms of its membership in order to create a new relationship based on trade and cooperation." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15354203 Update No 10 have indicated that all Conservative MPs will be expected to support the government in rejecting the referendum option. A Downing Street spokesman said the coalition agreement committed the UK to being a "positive participant in the European Union" and No 10 would "expect MPs and ministers to follow the government's policy". Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, said the debate was "a good start... but with all party leaders demanding that their MPs reject the motion I hold out little hope of a yes vote".
leave
Please do. No really, lets see how long it takes to regret it.
Excellent
I don't know what the EU does for us, someone must enlighten me, until then I don't know what to do.
They'll be back, but only because their terms will be accepted if they leave (should negotiations fail).
I don't know what the EU does for us, someone must enlighten me, until then I don't know what to do.
It's sort of an FTA (free trade agreement) I think but is also a governing body.
It costs us £50 million a day for the EU to impose stupid shit laws on us and fuck up our country, with no benefit apart from 'trade', I'm pretty sure that other countries and foreign businesses will want a stake in the UK market regardless of what the EU has to say
I think our membership within the EU costs us something like £40 million A DAY. Obviously, theres more behind the EU than a fancy club, like access and benefits within trade, resources etc... perhaps, no idea but Im just throwing it out there. But from what (little admitedly) I know, it costs us a whole lot of money which could be put to use MUCH BETTER elsewhere (look at it, 40 mil a day for fuck sake), and the EU imposes certain laws and restrictions on what we do, when really what laws and how we run our country is nothing to do with them or Brussels.
Well they already act like they're not a part of the EU, except when it benefits them. Besides didn't they "join" the EU when it was beneficial for them? Sounds like they're playing the pretend card, and then bailing instead of taking it like a adult

Surely renegotiation is the better option here rather than fully getting rid of it depending where our exports and imports are coming and going, not to mention not needing a million passports to travel.
Well they already act like they're not a part of the EU, except when it benefits them.
Benefits us like accepting hundreds of thousands of eastern europeans who sap the life out of our economy and send all their wages home and claim monstrous amounts of benefits, like paying billions to be a part of it, like having the EU impose it's stupid human rights acts on us which means we can't deport foreigners who commit crimes in our own country and trying to make us pay job seekers allowance to people looking for a job when they're not even a UK citizen or in the UK?
We also don't call ourselves European. British yo!
Totally not in Europe, at all
If shit fucks up I can move 30 miles south and i'm in the EU :v:

An American thinking he can tell us how to govern ourselves? Hahahahahaha.
An American thinking he can tell us how to govern ourselves? Hahahahahaha.
An American who hates being an American :v: Seriously, I wish my Opa never moved from Germany.
Totally not in Europe, at all
I think he meant that we don't refer to ourselves as European.
Too bad Sweden can't man up and do this, and it would be a bit of an shame if they left the EU before I manage to get citizenship there :c
I think he meant that we don't refer to ourselves as European.
Even though at some point, you guys had territory in the European main land.
We also don't call ourselves European. British yo!
If you are uneducated in geography then yeah.
Please do, we can be best buddies with Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

This.
If you are uneducated in geography then yeah.
His point is that people from the UK don't usually refer to themselves as European, not that we AREN'T European.
This, a thousand times. This.
....that's it? You do realize EVERY other European nation has to do the same thing?
His point is that people from the UK don't usually refer to themselves as European, not that we AREN'T European.
Because there are a few selected fuck wits who don't know geography. I have only known a few people to actually say that kind of rubbish and they were uneducated chavs who would ban immigrants and vote BNP.

Hope we leave, like 70% of our laws come from the EU, it's like an empire through the back door
I don't know, some of the EU consumer laws are damn good to have.
