It's money that could be used to keep your child's school running. So with the internet and e-books, do we really need millions for libraries? Libraries are quiet havens for the community. They take us to other worlds. They even make us laugh. But should these institutions -- that date back to 1900 B.C. -- be on the way out? There are 799 public libraries in Illinois. And they’re busy. People borrow more than 88 million times a year. But keeping libraries running costs big money. In Chicago, the city pumps $120 million a year into them. In fact, a full 2.5 percent of our yearly property taxes go to fund them. That's money that could go elsewhere – like for schools, the CTA, police or pensions One of the nation's biggest and busiest libraries is the $144-million Harold Washington Library in the Loop. It boasts a staggering 5,000 visitors a day!. So we decided to check it out. We used an undercover camera to see how many people used the library and what were they doing. In an hour, we counted about 300 visitors. Most of them were using the free internet. The bookshelves? Not so much. REVENUE FROM LIBRARIES We know we spend a lot on them. But libraries do bring in some revenue: more than $2 million in fines is collected annually by Chicago public libraries.
What the fuck? Really? This is really getting asked. Let me be the first to say, fuck you.
Once google scans in every page of every book, then we just need huge free internet cafes, we can still call them libraries.
Once google scans in every page of every book, then we just need huge free internet cafes, we can still call them libraries.
Too bad google books only gives you partial books for anything not in public domain.
Why are they cracking down on all this small shit?
"Hurr Durr Let's cut out a necessary tool in education and replace it with something useless Hurr" Can these fuckers get anymore stupid? Yeah, redirect the money to schools? Yeah, and they spend it all on fucking sports and other useless crap that makes the national IQ average drop another 10 points. These fuckers need a damn lesson in reality. /rant
lol! i still remember Glenn Beck going 'hurr i know all this stuff cause i read from the libraries, books are free there!'

Well done business people, the value of library is indeed in the cashflow it creates.
What the fuck? Really? This is really getting asked. Let me be the first to say, fuck you.
Let me be number 2 to say FUCK YOU. I get most of my entertainment and knowledge from those places.
I hate the atmosphere in my local library. There's always some crazy hobo smashing the computer keyboards and licking the screens, people who are unable to keep their kids quiet, smelly people and retards getting stuck trying to turn around between the shelves with their wheelchairs. [editline]02:42PM[/editline] It's suprising but it seems that teenagers are the best-behaving bunch there
do we really need public school i mean do the poor really need to learn shit i mean theyre just poor people who cares about them anyway
But that'd mean there would be less taxes and they'd stop being poor
But that'd mean there would be less taxes and they'd stop being poor
yes im sure the only thing standing in the way of the poor and private schooling is taxes im sure they could afford to build their own roads and amass their own libraries too if the government werent so greedy
The library saves me about 20$ a month alone on books if I read 2 a month. One month I read 10 books which would have all together cost about 125$. Not a waste of money. Oh wait taxes do that too!
Saw the stupid title and the source "MyFox." Immediately knew that this article was going to be shit. Really, how is Fox so fucked up? Practically the only reason they're popular and get a good cashflow is because Warner Bros decided to give them channel numbers mostly consisting of low, easy-to-spot ones. The CEO of this company and most of it's employees are idiotic beyond comprehension. Remember when they posted a Obama Speech on their website and they edited out the applauding poorly to support their theory that Obama is trying to make the country Socialist? They barely have any idea what they're talking about, as Socialism isn't that bad at all. Europe is holding up better than us with it. Look where a "Democratic" society allowing hardcore religious idiots and soccer moms to make political decisions.

I'll admit that i rarely, if ever, i go to the library. I use the internet for information about papers. But the library is still a crucial part to many people who can't afford to buy computers or books. I still read, but i just go out and buy my books. Speaking of which i probably have boxes of books i could donate. [editline]09:59AM[/editline]
Saw the stupid title and the source "MyFox." FOX news is the bigass corporation that reports bullshit and other wise idiotic information. Fox News is just a cities local news which isn't full of asshats who are saying shit for money, they actually live where you live so they actually care.
Seriously, the Bush administration already cut 30% of Library funding
I love the library, but don't use it for much more than sampling new authors these days. I'm finally starting to build my own little library, buying up the entire works of the authors I like. I figure everybody should have a well-stocked book shelf.
You can get laptops, dvds and other stuff from libraries too. The laptop i got was in some hibernating or some state instead of being turned off and tracked all the time and the library worker told me she can see wherever the laptop goes etc. Alot of websites were blocked but free it had free internet trough some cellphone service provider (quite fast).
I would say they're necessary.

They just make him mad money so he lets them stay.
It's money that could be used to keep your child's school running.
A kid could probably learn more just reading from a library than from the shitty schools we have now. Yay autodidactism.
I'm sure the government is spending way more of our money on other things we don't need. I don't see a need to stop spending on libraries.
Of course they could be using tax money for the children, the police, the firefighters, but once we're at that can't we pull out from Iraq, can't we stop shit in Afghanistan, can't we cut taxes from the government that wipes its' own ass with ten dollar bills?
Let's question the usage of libraries but let's not think anything of the resources going into the G20 summit.
There's probably better ways to fun libraries but that's no reason to not have them around. What would they do with the books when there's no libraries. They would build another library? edit: Besides, it's just a couple millions. 2.5% for culture and knowledge? What's wrong with that. Just have people pay for internet access.
I currently have 5 books from my library in my room. 2 of them are for university, the rest for enertainment. I love how you can go there and get old classics and read them because honestly, almost noone buys Dickens,Stevenson, Jack London etc. all of which I read in the past months. Libraries are awesome.

I prefer reading books the traditional way. Screens just don't work for me.
