• Microsoft shouldn't hire any CEO who wants to kill Bing and Xbox
According to "people with knowledge of his thinking," Bloomberg is reporting that, should Stephen Elop become Microsoft's next CEO, he would consider shutting down or selling parts of the company to "sharpen its focus." The two divisions mentioned specifically are Xbox and Bing. The "kill Bing" and "kill Xbox" memes have become popular among certain kinds of analyst. Though obfuscated by Microsoft's new reporting structure, both Bing and Xbox share one feature: they're not great money-makers. It's important to be a little wary of this kind of anonymous, unsourced commentary. It may not be accurate, and it may be agenda-driven. This kind of "thinking" appeals greatly to short-term investors who are more interested in boosting the next quarter's numbers than the long-term health of the company. The anonymous leak could, therefore, tend to make Elop seem more appealing to Wall Street. Conversely, the leak shows a lack of strategic thinking and somewhat undermines the Xbox One, a product that launches in a couple of weeks. That's not likely to inspire confidence in a CEO candidate. Microsoft's head of corporate communications responded to Bloomberg in typically robust fashion, saying "We appreciate Bloomberg's foray into fiction and look forward to future episodes." Nonetheless, analysts, in particular Rick Sherlund of Nomura Holdings, continue to encourage Microsoft to ditch these parts of the business.
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/11/microsoft-shouldnt-hire-any-ceo-who-wants-to-kill-bing-and-xbox/ Personally, I like Stephen Elop, but I really hope he dooesn't want to spin off these divisions, whether it'd please the stockholders or not.
kill bing not xbox
Kill Xbox. Keep Bing. There, I said it so none of you have to.
Microsoft's head of corporate communications responded to Bloomberg in typically robust fashion, saying "We appreciate Bloomberg's foray into fiction and look forward to future episodes."
Heh. Better than "We don't comment on rumors and speculation."
Refocus both. Problem solved.
I remember for the longest time Microsofts web side (so stuff like MSN, Bing, etc.) didn't just fail to break even, they were instead massive money sinks. I doubt much would be lost of MS just killed them off (Like the Zune, Kin, etc.) Xbox is a bit different because while it might not make them huge amounts of money, it puts their brand out there which is important (see IE), I've always wondered if it'd do well under a more consumer oriented management system though (Microsoft has always been predominately focused on corporate customers)
I can understand Bing from the perspective that Microsoft doesn't want products with web-search ability to be dependant on Google, but beyond that is Bing fully retarded and shitty. Xbox is just a joke now, since Microsoft brands it as a media center that happens to be able to play games.
It's a bit understandable why he wants to do it. MS currently has a bit of a problem with having tons of expensive products and services which are just flailing around the place and costing them a fortune. They need to start wrapping up those loose ends and putting stronger focus into their more core products. I don't know if ditching the Xbox division is a good idea as it may just need a good ol' restructuring but Bing can certainly be canned. Bing is just a money-pit project that is going nowhere. They've had tons of these in recent years. Two that come to mind are the Zune and their Surface tablets. Both (while not bad products) were handled very poorly and lost them so much money. Fuck they even brought the Surface back for a new generation without even fixing the reasons why nobody bought it in the first place. Gotta start cleaning up these poorly handled money-pits.
Microsoft uses Bing for a lot of stuff, and they're starting to integrate it deeply into Windows itself. It may be a money sink right now (and it may never be actually profitable), but discarding it would be stupid - who would buy it anyway? They'd just be closing it down, and while it may increase profits in the short run, they'll be missing it down the line.
Merge Bing and xbox. Xbing or BingboX.
Merge Bing and xbox. Xbing or BingboX.
Bingo-box Finally a console for generation grey hair.
kill xbox move back to PC, so you don't have to make expensive hardware that screws the company.
Heh. Better than "We don't comment on rumors and speculation."
You know, one has to give it to MS. Their PR department has been improving a hell of a lot lately.
You know, one has to give it to MS. Their PR department has been improving a hell of a lot lately.
Don't worry, the xbox division's PR department compensates for that
Here's how to make Xbox successful as fuck: Let gamers tell you what they want. Ignore the suits telling you what they want. Microsoft's unveiling of the Xbox proved to me that they're getting too greedy, wanting too much control, and couldn't give a toss about gamers. Xbox is marketing first, games second. Screw that mess. It's nice that they 180'd on almost all the horrible shit, but them developing the Xbox like that in the first place was enough to completely turn me away for good
Microsoft should stick with their voice and touch research instead of focusing on web search, that's where the xbox and windows prevails
They should stop screwing up Windows with this tablet nonsense.
fuck bing marry internet explorer kill xbox wait am i doing it right?
I actually use Bing, but only to search for online episodes. Google filters them out, but Bing does not.
By all means cut down on the flab that is Bing, but don't kill Xbox. The consumers benefit from their competition with Sony (for whatever it's worth this day).
Xbox is just a joke now, since Microsoft brands it as a media center that happens to be able to play games.
yeah but again, thats just poor handling of the product rather than a problem with the product itself
just kill bing and paid xbox live
I can understand Bing from the perspective that Microsoft doesn't want products with web-search ability to be dependant on Google, but beyond that is Bing fully retarded and shitty. Xbox is just a joke now, since Microsoft brands it as a media center that happens to be able to play games.
Usually consoles that start off bad make up for it later, and next gen they sometimes take over, a good example of this is the PS3 which was in an extremely similar situation to the Xbox One, yet now it's doing perfectly fine. Xbox One isn't as bad as people make it out to be, and usually the reason for this is a bandwagon, besides if Xbox was gone then Playstation wouldn't have any real competitor (lets face it, Nintendo isn't exactly up there with Xbox and Playstation), and then all the bad things you're complaining about now you're going to be complaining about the Playstation since with no competition they have no reason to keep things as high quality as you're seeing them now, since there really isn't another option on buying a different console.
I actually use Bing, but only to search for online episodes. Google filters them out, but Bing does not.
You're right! That is helpful. Thanks Bing.
You know what I need out of Bing? Minimalism and accuracy. I don't need a ton of fluff, just give me my results straight.
I need bing because my school blocks google for no fucking reason on the guest network
I think they should kill Xbox, so Ouya can rise to its deserved fame.
kill bing not xbox
No Don't! I get free shit from using their search engine
No Don't! I get free shit from using their search engine
I thought I was the only guy using that Bing Rewards bot. Super useful.
I thought I was the only guy using that Bing Rewards bot. Super useful.
Google search Bing Rewards, says its not available in my country. Oh... Well, nothing good about it any more, can't even get free stuff. For a split second I thought there was a glimmer of hope it could redeem itself...
I actually use Bing as my main search engine. Works just as well as Google for me. Never understood the hate outside of "haha micro$hit sucks google is the best 5evrr" And also the rewards program is great. Free 5 dollar Amazon giftcards just for using a searh engine. Yes thank you.
