Crews on Saturday morning began planting 16 swamp white oak trees around the eight-acre plaza, which will serve as a memorial to the nearly 2,800 people killed in the terror attacks of Sept 11, 2001. The trees are the first of more than 400 that will line the plaza, creating an overhead canopy for visitors. The 16 trees were cultivated for four years on a New Jersey nursery and loaded into eight tractor-trailers at midnight Friday for the 35-mile trip to Manhattan. The trees will eventually soar to 80 feet. Memorial planners said swamp white oaks were chosen for their durability and because they grow naturally in the New York area, Washington and Pennsylvania, where the terror attacks took place.
Renders [IMG_THUMB]http://i45.tinypic.com/21oot4o.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] [IMG_THUMB]http://i48.tinypic.com/23vlqva.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] [IMG_THUMB]http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/8741/fosterrogersmakiri1.jpg[/IMG_THUMB]
I hope a bird doesn't run into them
Go fuck yerself, eh?
Hurrah! A symbol of rebirth for NYC!
they finally started it, woohoo
The whole center will look great when it's finished.
they finally started it, woohoo
The park has been under construction for about 3 years now, mostly because they had to demolish what was there, build a museum, and build a park on top of that.
Sorry, I was trying to be funny but I guess I forgot about how distasteful it is.

And I get to hop in a chair before the conspiracy nutjobs and the anti-Americans get in here...
Rating late because I still find it absolutely pathetic that it's been nearly nine years already and nothing's really been accomplished at the site.
And I get to hop in a chair before the conspiracy nutjobs and the anti-Americans get in here...
I don't think anyone could really be opposed to this on "anti american" grounds, or at least I don't see how...
I thought the builder in the first picture didn't have any legs :crossarms: Also slow news day.

First, trees. Next, we start rebuilding the grandeur of the New York skyline.
I wish I had enough money to buy an office in the new WTC. And a use for an office. :saddowns:

bout time
Cool. Last time I was there (2008?) it was several stories of a concrete hole in the ground with a few walkways and a couple of metal skeletons. I wonder what it looks like now.

3 things. 1) Why the hell did it take them 9 years to do this? 2) Why do we need a memorial park? 3) What else will be in this park??
3 things. 1) Why the hell did it take them 9 years to do this? 2) Why do we need a memorial park? 3) What else will be in this park??
1. Insurance companies, the City, construction companies and architects were all fighting each other over how the buildings were going to be rebuilt. Finally got settled in early '08. 2. Thousands of people died there. 3. Probably some stands for selling newspapers and hotdogs? It's NYC, after all.

I've been down there, they are making progress but really slowly. I can't see this being done for another decade.
Can anyone explain why it takes twenty years estimated to build a cement park with some buildings? Any other project this would be done in a month and a half.
